Natural Resources Agscience I Thomas/Collins
Definition • The raw materials we use for housing, clothing, transportating, heating and cooking. • Used to meet our needs and wants • Can be split into two categories: • Renewable • Nonrenewable
Nonrenewable • Exist in finite or limited amounts, formed through natural processes that take millions of years. • EX: Fossil fuels or Gold
Renewable • Can be replenished through natural and/or human processes • Ex Trees in the forest, Solar and Wind energy
Discussion • What happened to the Worlds popcorn supply? • What needs to be changed for future generations? • Is this real life?
Remember; it is important to realize that renewable resources need to be carefully managed. • People can use a renewable resources in a way that it can not recover. Ex. Grasslands overgrazed; Groundwater pumped faster than precipitation.
Sustainability • the ability of an ecosystem to maintain ecological processes, functions, biodiversity and productivity into the future • Example: Harvesting only the volume of trees that a forest can grow back.
Demonstration #2 RULE: each member must take a piece each round to be sustained.
Discussion • What are the advantages to using a resources in a sustainable way? • Disadvantages? • What would have happened if 2 or 3 more people joined your group?
