  1. Epithelial Membranes

  2. 1. Cutaneous Membranes • The skin! • Exposed to air • Dry membrane • Protective functions • Tissue types?

  3. 2. Mucous Membranes • A.k.a. “mucosa” • Wet – bathed in mucous or urine • Lines body cavities open to the exterior • Digestive • Respiratory • Urinary • Reproductive

  4. Normal stomach mucosa • Functions • Absorption – SI • Secretion – respiratory/stomach • Protection – close to exterior • Tissue types? Mucosa lining the duodenum (1st part of the small intestine)

  5. 3. Serous Membranes • A.k.a. “serosa” • Serous fluid – secreted by the membrane; reduces friction • Lines body cavities closed to the exterior • Thoracic cavity • Abdominopelvic cavity Serosa covering the heart

  6. naming serosa: • Parietal – covering walls • Visercal – covering organs • Examples: • Parietal and Visceral Pleura – lining the pleural cavity and lung exterior • Parietal and Visceral Pericardium – lining the pericardial cavity and heart • Parietal and Visceral Peritoneum – linings of the abdominal cavity and organs

  7. Synovial Membranes

  8. Connective tissue • Soft aerolar • Provide smooth surface around joints • Secrete lubricating fluid
