  2. Brief History of General Education Revision Project at GCSU • Work started in 2003 to develop a new curriculum appropriate for our liberal arts mission (ad hoc committee charged by the senate) • General Education Conceptual Framework found on your handout

Senate Motion on Gen Ed • Subject: Revised General Education (CORE) Curriculum (3-27-2006) • Motion: To approve the conceptual framework of the revised general education program, with final approval of the program contingent upon University Senate endorsement of a detailed implementation plan to be prepared by a committee appointed by the University President, which is representative of the University Community.

Summary of Findings • What can we implement? • Assessment • Passed many of the proposed outcomes last year in the senate (Core outcomes and general education goals) • GCSU is better prepared for the new assessment requirements of the USG core policy (Fall 2009) • New general education assessment instrument • GCSU is now a member of the VSA • Plans to administer CLA • New director of assessment and assessment coordinators in each unit

Summary of Findings • What will present difficulties, given our current resources? • First Year Seminars • Original Concept • Add/drop? • Course repeats? • AP credit in ENGL? • ENGL courses taught by MFA candidates • Writing/Speaking Areas of Emphasis • Faculty development • Willingness of faculty to participate Integration Faculty Development

Summary of Findings: Implemental Difficulties • First-Year Seminar • GEIPC suggested responses • Cluster ENGL 1101 and RHET 1100 • Open to many themes, but courses can be repeated in a cluster environment from term to term • Attach one-hour lab to the RHET course • Catches students with AP credit in ENGL • Strengthen writing/speaking emphasis • Would require four-six additional hires • Speech lab presented many difficulties • Fewer sections of composition might enable more participation by ENGL faculty • Limitations on our charge

Summary of Findings • What aspects still present problems with the USG core framework? • Transferability • New USG proposal makes it easier • GCSU proposal is still out-of-sync with the Mathematics requirement in Area A • Required Math above Precalculus USG expectations GCSU’s liberal arts expectations

  12. Summary of Findings • What remains muddy? • Defining criteria for courses that meet the areas of emphasis requirements • such as Global/Diversity Those darn outcomes… How much of a course needs to be global?
