Doing education research Include but not limit to the following steps: • Literature Search • e.g. Journal articles, reference texts, news, etc. • Design Research • The experimental design or methodology. • Data Collection • e.g. Questionnaire and interview. • Data Analysis and Interpretation • Critical analysis of the issue from multiple perspectives. • Writing Research Proposal and Report

  3. How to do a literature search? • Define your Topic • Search Electronic Databases • Search Library Catalogue • Search E-journals • Search the Web • Search for News

  4. Define your topic • What am I looking to find out with my research? • e.g. The impact of principal leadership behaviors on instructional practice and student engagement. • What is the focus of my research? • What are the principal leadership behaviors? • Local or international context?

  5. Search electronic databases • Use electronic databases to search for local and international literature. • Electronic databases contain recent information from book reviews, journal articles, conference papers, and other materials. • Some databases provide the complete full text articles or papers. • Other databases will just provide abstracts of the journal papers.

Search electronic databases Some examples of international electronic databases: • ERIC (Education Resources Information Center) • ProQuest Education Journals • PsycINFO & PsycArticles • Scopus • ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Some examples of local electronic databases: • Hong Kong Journals Online • Dissertations and Theses Collection (DTC) Tips: • Available via Library Website (http://www.lib.ied.edu.hk) → E-Resources Tab

Search electronic databases Identify your keywords • Keywords are words or phrases that should appear in the information you are searching for. • Keywords are used to do search in the e-databases. For example, your topic is : Study the development of inclusive education under education reform Keywords are : inclusive education education reform • Use Boolean Operators (AND/OR/NOT), Wildcards (*), etc, where appropriate, e.g. inclusive educationANDeducation reform

Search electronic databases ERIC database • Provides access to education literature and resources and to information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education Index. It contains full text with citation and abstracts from educational and education-related journals.

Demonstration • Tentative topic: Study the development of inclusive education under education reform • Keywords: • Inclusive education AND education reform • Limit your search to full text articles • Use thesaurus function where necessary • e.g. (Inclusive Education) use (Inclusive Schools) How many records retrieved?

Searching tips: Expand your search • Use “Expanders” from the database search screen to expand your search • Use boolean operator “OR” to include more search terms • e.g. youth OR adolescent OR teenager • Use truncation (*) to expand your search term in alternative way • e.g. adolescen* to search for adolescent, adolescence, etc.

Searching tips: Narrow your search • Use “Limiter” from the database search screen to limit your search results in various way • Consider the suggested “Narrow Search Results by Subject” from the search result screen • Use boolean operator “AND” to limit search results to a narrower scene • e.g. youth AND hong kong

  22. Export search results You may export your search results to: • An email account • Bibliographic management software such as RefWorks (available from Library Website) • http://www.lib.ied.edu.hk/research/refworks/index.html
