William Sims Bainbridge, Ph.D. wbainbri@nsf.gov The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense…" With an annual budget of about $5.5 billion, we are the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities. In many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the major source of federal backing.

NSF + CISE + IIS The Division of Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS) supports research and education projects that: (1) increase the capabilities of individuals via interaction with information systems or via machine-mediated interactions with other people, and (2) advance the understanding and development of the foundations of robust intelligent systems. Criterion 1: Intellectual Merit • How important is the proposed activity to advancing knowledge and understanding within its own field or across different fields? • How well qualified is the proposer (individual or team) to conduct the project? • To what extent does the proposed activity suggest and explore creative and original concepts? • How well conceived and organized is the proposed activity? • Is there sufficient access to resources?

How well does the activity advance discovery and understanding while promoting teaching, training, and learning? • How well does the activity broaden the participation of underrepresented groups ? • To what extent will it enhance the infrastructure for research and education? • Will the results be disseminated broadly to enhance scientific and technological understanding? • What may be the benefits of the proposed activity to society? Socio-Cognitive Orthotics “Multi-Agent Plan Management for Socio-Cognitive Orthotics” NSF Award 0534280 - $539,626 Program Manager: William Bainbridge IIS Division of Information & Intelligent Systems Investigators: Edmund Durfee, Martha Pollack University of Michigan, Ann Arbor “Information technology can help a person with cognitive impairment in managing his or her everyday life, by modeling the activities the person wants or needs to do, monitoring the person's activities as they unfold, and guiding the person to ensure that the most important activities occur... novel techniques for continual collaborative multi-agent management of loosely-coupled plans... socio-cognitive orthotics, where information technology can be cost-effectively used to simultaneously promote independence while combating isolation for cognitively-impaired people.”
