Developing Science Professionals • A professional development programme for laboratory, scientific and technical employees up to graduate level. • Delivery through a new Higher Apprenticeship for Life Sciences & Chemical Science Professionals. • Pathways for life sciences, chemical science, food science, healthcare science, process development and packaging development. • Supports professional recognition as registered science technician or registered scientist. • An alternative work based training route to the traditional academic route to graduate status.

Why Science Professionals? • Demand is rising for technicians in a broad range of sectors. • Scientific and technical skills are essential to delivering growth in the UK in the 21st Century. • Science professionals provide a unique transferable and increasingly sought after skill set. Science Council report identifies: • 155,240 primary science workers with level 3 & 4 qualifications employed in 2009/10. • 35,000 of laboratory, scientific and technical employees are aged 16 -29. • 31% of the total population of primary science workers are aged over 50. There is a need to invest in the pipeline of professionally recognised competent technicians in order to secure the scientific skills pipeline of the future.
