  4. What is arthritis? • Arthritis- Painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints.

  5. Why people crack their knuckles. • 1. Relief • a. Mental relaxation • b. Physical relaxation • 2. Feel looser and enjoy more mobility. • 3.Habitual “knuckle crackers”. • Habit for athletes, students, etc.

What causes the “cracking” sound? • Joints (knuckles) are covered by a capsule… • In the capsule, synovial fluid is contained… • This lubricates bone surfaces… • Gases are continuously dissolved in this fluid. • One cracks a knuckle, the stretching of the capsule lowers pressure inside the joint, creates a vacuum • A“bubble” is created, which then bursts, creating a “popping” or “cracking” sound.
