  1. Dimensional Analysis

  2. Eating beans may cause gas. Write this as a hypothesis

  3. giga mega kilo hectadeka by decicentimilli micro(m) nano Need to know the prefixes for the metric system and be able to turn each into a statement of equality. For instance: 1 kg = 1000 g Or 1 m = 100 cm Or 1 mm = 0.001 m

  4. Write a statement of equality for the following: • Decimeter and millimeter • Megaliter and kiloliter • Milligram and centigram

  5. So, even if you know how to use the king henry device, you need to know how to use dimensional analysis Look at your dimensional cheat sheet and lets go through it.

  6. Lets do dimensional analysis on the metric conversions Convert the following using dimensional analysis (these are single step problems) • 15 ml = _______ L b) 45 km = _______ m c) 0.056 cg = _______ g d) 3.56 g = ________kg

  7. Single step problems • How many seconds are in one hour • If your cat weighs 18 lbs, how many kilograms is this? (1 kg = 2.2 lbs) • What volume will 200 g of zinc occupy? (density Zn=7.1g/cm3)

  8. Working multistep problems Try this problem How many seconds are in a week?

  9. Multistep conversions – show your work • 1.5 km = ________ cm • 0.0034 mg = _______ kg • 78 daL = _______ cL • 56 cm = _______km

  10. Volume problems Can’t use King Henry when dealing with volume like cm3 or m3. Example: how many cm3 is 1.5m3? 1.5 m3 could be found by taking L ength x width x height 1.5 m x 1m x 1m now turn each meter to cm 150 cm x 100 cm x 100 cm = 1 500 000 cm3

  11. Working out volume problems Work this problem 1 m3 = _______ cm3 L x w x h 1m x 1m x 1m = 1 m3 this is the same as 100 cm x 100 cm x 100 cm = 1 000 000 cm3

  12. Try these • 1 dm3 = _________ L • 200 cm3 = ________ m3 • 2 m3 = ________ dm3
