  3. European Conquest of Africa 2. Trade relationship changed from trade as equals when Portuguese ships sailed up East African coast and seized cities and riches.

  4. European Conquest of Africa 3. Other European powers followed (Dutch, French, English) set up trading posts, and settlers moved inland. Slave trade began.

  5. European Conquest of Africa 4. European settlers in North and South America needed workers for mines and plantations, and enslaved millions of Africans.

  6. European Conquest of Africa 5. Slave trade made some African’s rich, but many societies broke down from the loss of skilled workers and families being torn apart.

  7. European Conquest of Africa 6. After slave trade ended in mid-1800s, Europeans began to raid the African interior for its resources and wanted to build empires.

  8. European Conquest of Africa 7. Africans were unable to resist Europeans with modern weapons and Europeans set rules for colonizing Africa.

  9. European Conquest of Africa 8. Almost all of Africa was colonized by 1914, which caused long-lasting problems, such as Europeans taking best land, Africans forced to labor in terrible conditions, and political boundaries that divided some ethnic groups and forced others to live together.
