  1. The Manthan Award South Asia 2011 Title of the Project: Transformer Protection from Unauthorized Person. Dhaka, Bangladesh Presented By: Engr. Tanvir Ahmed Chowdhury Engr. Aleya Ferdousi Urmi Supervisor Mr. Ashim Kumar Saha Assistant Professor Faculty of Engineering American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB)

  2. Content: • Objective • Overview • Cost of the Product • Background • Block diagram • Implementation • Future work • Paper published • Award achievement • Practical working video clip • Website & Other Links

  3. Objective • In this project, the idea to protect the transformer from unauthorized person is mainly come from the national problem of the rural area of Bangladesh. Day by day Transformer stolen by the unauthorized person became a verse problem. Because of this problem every year huge amount of money go in vain. Especially for the people of rural areas, it is very difficult to bear this amount. So the project is established by considering this great problem. • It is noted that 31st March 2010 The national daily newspaper “Prothom-alo” also published a article on it.

  4. Transformer: A transformer is a device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another. Transformers are essential for high voltage to low voltage or vise verse. So to give the protection of this important device this circuit has been implemented.

  5. Overview of the product: In this project a non-inverting Op-Amp is used to compare the on/off conditions which will be provided by the two neutrals (one is connected to the Transformer side & another is connected to the customers side). With the disconnection of the line the amplifier will send off condition (zero). Then it will be inverted to on condition (one) and send it to the relay. After the activation of that relay it will contact the switch to the device, and then a signal will send the central control room. Until the authority takes any action, it will ring. Under load shedding also it can be operate, because a charge controller device is connected to the circuit which will give backup to the device. The whole device should be packed in an isolated box and it will be attached to the Transformer.

  6. Reason for selecting Mobile Network • Grameenphone was able to keep 98% of its entire network operational throughout the critical first 36-hour period after the cyclone, which battered the Khulna-Barisal coastal belt and passed through the country. • Grameenphone has over 15000 base stations sites located around the country.

  7. Background of the Product: • A transformer is a device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through inductively coupled conductors the transformer's coils. • Transformers are essential for high voltage power, which makes long distance transmission economically practical. • It is major part of Electricity transmission. So that it is important for us that it should be kept safe from being wasted. That is how the idea of the transformer protection got introduced.

  8. Block Diagram of the Product Figure : Block diagram of transformer protection by sending signal to the control room.

  9. Implementation This circuit has been implemented for the protection of the transformer in the rural areas of Bangladesh. There are two switches which has been connected to the neutral. One from transformer neutral side and another from customers. Depending on the ON/OFF situation the circuit has been implemented. Then the output will send to the communication device ,then it will passed the information to the control room and it will identify the location of the problem.

  10. Figure : Schematic diagram which will provide protection to the transformer.

  11. Operation of the circuit Case: When T and C both are close then output show on 1.1V approximately, after inverted (using NOT gate) the output show “zero” volt and relay does not operated. Figure is shown below:

  12. II. When “T” is close and ”C” is open then output show on 1.1V approximately, after inverted the output show “zero” volt and relay does not still operated. “T” is represented by Transformer side neutral and “C” is represented by customers’ side neutral. Figure is shown below:

  13. III. When “T” is open and “C” is close then output near to zero after Inverted (using NOT gate) the output show 1V and relay is close and conduct to mobile device for transmitted the signal to control room. Figure is shown below:

  14. IV. When “T” and “C” both are open then output near to zero after Inverted (using NOT gate) the output show 1V and relay is close and conduct to mobile device for transmitted the signal to control room. Figure is shown below:

  16. PCB Layout A printed circuit board or PCB, is used to mechanically support and electrically connect electronic components using conductive pathways, tracks or signal traces etched from copper sheets laminated onto a non-conductive substrate. Need for PCB No wires Makes a design permanent In industrial scale production of circuits So the circuit has been implemented also in the PCB board.

  21. Cost of the Product: • The cost of my invented Product or Device is only BDT 5000.That way every rural area poor people easy to buy for protect his / her area's Transformer from Thief. And Also Our Bangladesh Govt. can also buy our device at lowest cost. If the 1st time any problem occur in the transformer then govt. will give the support but if it is happened again then consumer itself have to take the responsibility. In  case they will might have to bought the transformer which prize is 60000-80000.So that amount of prize is not possible to afford our rural area’s people. That’s  why our invented device is only BDT 5000 , that help to protect Transformer from Unauthorized person (Thief).

  22. Future Work The circuit which has been designed in this project is capable to meet the demand of the age. It provides a lot of facilities. It is cheaper and lighter. And the requirement that has been used is also available. It provides the consumer with the opportunity to have the record the information. Though this project is successful to detect the problems but it won’t be fruitful without any physical development. By doing some additional work it can be developed. suppose by using a sensor (to sense the problem),alarm(to give alarm to the control room) and a display board (To identify the problems location) it can be developed.

  23. Paper Published • In my B.Sc in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) course in the part of Project & Thesis in a group work me and my others members we invented a device which could protect Transformer from stolen at the rural area those are control by Rural Electrification Board (REB). This is renowned by REB member’s engineers. Also published in “THE DAILY KALERKANTHO” at 8th October’2010. And THE DAILY PROTHOM-ALO & THE DAILY STAR at 8th July’2011. Also 7th July,ATN News TV in Bangladesh.
