  3. Hydrogen • 90% of atoms in the Universe • Highly Reactive • Forms a Diatomic Molecule as a gas • Two atoms of same element in a covalent bond

  4. Halogens • Group 17 • Reactive in Elemental Form • 7 Valence Electrons

  5. Halogen Uses • Fluorine  toothpaste, etch glass, frost light bulbs • Chlorine  disinfect water, bleach • Bromine  dyes in cosmetics • Iodine  essential to diet • Astatine  Radioactive and rare

  6. Group 18 Exist as isolated atoms 8 Valence Electrons  Stable Noble Gases

  7. Noble Gas Uses • Helium  Blimps, Balloons • Neon and Argon  “neon lights” • Argon and Krypton  laser lights
