Elements and Their PropertiesNonmetals Chapter 19 Section 2
Nonmetals • Usually Gases or Brittle Solids at room temp. • Do NOT conduct heat or electricity well • NOT Shiny • All (except Hydrogen) are found on the right side of the Periodic Table
Hydrogen • 90% of atoms in the Universe • Highly Reactive • Forms a Diatomic Molecule as a gas • Two atoms of same element in a covalent bond
Halogens • Group 17 • Reactive in Elemental Form • 7 Valence Electrons
Halogen Uses • Fluorine toothpaste, etch glass, frost light bulbs • Chlorine disinfect water, bleach • Bromine dyes in cosmetics • Iodine essential to diet • Astatine Radioactive and rare
Group 18 Exist as isolated atoms 8 Valence Electrons Stable Noble Gases
Noble Gas Uses • Helium Blimps, Balloons • Neon and Argon “neon lights” • Argon and Krypton laser lights
