Rise of Napoleon • 1792 Became captain • 1794 Promoted to brigadier general at age 25 • 1795 Saved National Convention from Parisian mob • 1796 Made commander of French army in Italy • 1797 Returned to France as conquering hero to train army for invasion of Britain • Stuck Egypt to threaten British holdings in India • 1799 Participated in coup d’état that led to his virtual dictatorship • Made first consul, head of three-man executive • 1802 Made consul for life • 1804 Crowned himself emperor

  4. Napoleon and Religion • Remember, it’s the Enlightenment ideal!—RATIONALISM • Catholic France, Muslim Egypt • Religion provided morality and support

Napoleon and Religion • Concordat of 1801 • Pope could depose French bishops, but Napoleon named new ones • Pope forced to acknowledge accomplishments of Revolution, prevented from getting Church lands back, and force to recognize Catholicism as religion of majority, NOT state • Relationship between church and state changed: • No state religion • C and Pro. Clergy on state payroll • C church no longer enemy

Napoleon and Law • Napoleonic Code: apply Enl/FrRev to law • Equality of all citizens; right of individuals to choose profession, religion; abolish serfdom and feudalism • Napoleonic Code: stop radical • Divorce more difficult; property in control of men; women in minority status; protect property; conscription allowed for military

Napoleon and Life • Reconstructed Bureaucracy: meritocracy • Reconstructed Economy: Continental System • Cut British out of Europe • Only loosely applied • Reconstructed Culture: bring religion back, but also stressed physics and chemistry; also encouraged arts, architecture, monuments, police force, sewer systems….

  8. Napoleon Abroad • Taking CS and CN with him • Fought “Coalitions” • Major enemy: Britain, esp. w/sea power • Defeated Prussia, Austria, destroyed HRE • Eventually defeated • British sea power • Nationalism of invaded areas • Invasion of Russia, “Great Retreat”

  9. End of Napoleon • Exiled to Elba • Returned, 1815; defeated again and sentenced to St. Helena
