  1. 9th Grade Parent Meeting Orientation Day Norwalk High School 2018-2019

  2. Vision for Student Achievement: All students will graduate and be eligible to attend a four-year college or university without the need for remediation. Our students will possess the knowledge, skills, and certifications necessary to be successful in any post-secondary environment. Our graduates will have a strong sense of what occupation they would like to pursue as a career, and will have received personalized guidance as to which post-secondary institutions, training programs, or industries will best fit their personal goals.

  3. Expected Student Learner Results: Norwalk High School graduates will be: Able to apply their knowledge and skills to solve complex problems by thinking critically and creatively, working collaboratively, and effectively utilizing technology. Prepared for success in both college and career. Responsible members of the Norwalk High School community.

  4. Graduation Requirements Additional Requirement: Student must earn a Minimum 2.0 GPA

  5. UC and CSU Requirements • University of California A-G (grade of “C” or better): • A. History/Social Science: 2 years • B. English (Lit/Comp): 4 years • C. Math: 3 years* • D. Laboratory Science: 2 years* • E. Foreign Language: 2 years* • F. Visual/Performing Arts: 1 year • G. College Prep Electives: 1 year • *At least one additional year recommended

  7. Who is My Counselor?

The College & Career Center • Visitors from different colleges come to speak to students. • They help with applications, admissions, choosing majors, financial aid, and address questions students have. • Regular visitors to our campus: • UCLA • UCI • UC Berkeley • Cal State Long Beach • Cal State Fullerton • Cerritos College • Cypress College

  9. The Career Center • Many different guest speakers come to talk about potential career options for all students. • Visitors include, but are not limited to: • Lawyers • Armed Services • Cosmetologists • Engineers • Firefighters/Police • Doctors/Medical Professionals

  10. CCGI District Initiative www.californiacolleges.edu Purpose: CCGI works to ensure that all 6th-12th grade students in California have access to a systematic baseline of guidance and support as they plan and prepare for college and career readiness.

What does it offer? • Provides us with evidence based data driven information that can continue to guide us in effectively educating our students. • Offers viewing for educators, parents, and students • Better coordinates and tracks services such as college exploration, college applications, and financial aid applications, which in turn continues to lend to our data. • Students benefit from a guided experience, completing grade level appropriate activities to create a post secondary plan aligned with their interest and goals. • Students’ PowerSchool will be emerged into their accounts

  12. What can Parents do to help? • Provide a good work space • Discuss high school course work with your child and School Counselor- Use Agenda • Stay involved in School! Doing this will also make you confident that your involvement makes a difference in your child’s academic success • Start making college visits and seeking information on various college programs with your child • Attend parent/teacher conferences. Communicate often with teachers and counselor • Monitor your student’s progress on Power School • Develop the attitude “I expect my child to go to college” instead of “I’m hoping my child attends college”. • Encourage involvement in Extracurricular Activities

  13. Need a Helping Hand? • Tutoring is available in all core subjects before, during and/or after school. • Students and parents are advised to utilize PowerSchool REGULARLY to help manage and monitor progress. • There are daily contracts offered for parents who want to keep students on track.
