  1. Thesis and Support Peer Review

  2. Thesis and Support Quick Check • First, grab your homework and find a partner at another table. • Take three minutes and discuss with your partner what your personal thoughts are about affluenza. Discuss what they were before you watched the video and what they were after watching the video. (It is okay if you didn’t really have an opinion prior to the video – you could discuss why this never really crossed into your mindset.) (On the back of your homework write down 1 – and your partner’s name)

  3. Thesis and Support Quick Check • Still with your homework in hand, find a new partner – it cannot be someone who sits at your “usual” table! • Take a few minutes to discuss with that person what was hard about writing this thesis and support and what was easy about writing this! • (On the back of your homework write down 2 – and your partner’s name)

  4. Thesis and Support Quick Check • Even still with your homework in hand, find one last partner – you still can’t be with someone at your “usual table”! • Take a minute and discuss with your partner what you would do if you had fifteen more minutes to work on this assignment. (On the back of your homework write down 3 – and your partner’s name)

  5. Thesis and Support Quick Check • Trade papers with your partner. • Take a few minutes to read your partner’s paper. • After you read your partner’s paper, write at the bottom who you BELIEVE the writer’s audience is. • After this – you can go back to your table! 

  6. First, let’s check the paper formatting. Make any necessary corrections! ENG 102 - 12462 Period 1 A header is NOT required for a one page paper – but is acceptable if there! YourName ENG 102 - 12463 Period 2 Ms. LaDuca ENG 102 - 12568 Period 3 January 13, 2014 All of this formatting is worth 5 points – it is 5 points or no points, you must have the heading information correct, a title, and the piece double spaced to get 5 points. On the notecard please put F= and then put 5 or 0

  7. First, let’s check the paper formatting. Make any necessary corrections! For your WC points (5 or 0) you need to have the following to get your points: the title Works Cited centered, both sources properly formatted, in alphabetical order, with the second lines indented. Please put WC=

  8. Thesis and Support Quick Check Look at the title! T= 1 pt or 3 pts • Is it effective? Is it beyond the obvious and mundane, yet not drippy and sappy? Put a plus if you like the title, or put a minus if you think the title needs more strength! Look at the first sentence of the paragraph! • Review the thesis – circle affluenza and underline your comment. TH= 1 pt to 3 pts (if it isn’t your first sentence then it is a zero)

  9. Thesis and Support Quick Check • Using a highlighter, highlight the short quote. • Circle the lead-in. • Review the usage. If it is correct, put a plus in the margin, if there is an error – place a minus sign in the margin. Make the correction for the person. Lead in “blah blah blah” (Cooper). Or Cooper believes “blah blah blah.” SQ= 0pts or 5pts

  10. Thesis and Support Quick Check • Using a highlighter, highlight the paraphrase. • It needs to be the second to last sentence in the paragraph! • Review the usage. If it is correct, put a plus in the margin, if there is an error – place a minus sign in the margin. • Be sure there is either a lead-in or proper parenthetical documentation. Also, be sure that there are no quotation marks and the end punctuation only follows the parentheses! P= 0pt or 5pts

  11. Thesis and Support Quick Check • Look for the ellipses! Circle the ellipses! Check for the following: • The quote still flows even with the use of an ellipses. • Proper interpolation is used – if necessary. • Is a [SIC] required and not there? • We use the end punctuation PLUS the ellipses since if it is a long omission! • Are the periods evenly spaced? • E = 1 pt or 3 pts

  12. Thesis and Support Quick Check • Check the point of view! This was to be in third person only, which means no: I, you, we, us, our, me, my, mine . . . • If you see any examples that don’t meet third person point of view – put an X through the pronoun! • PV - 0pts or 3 pts

  13. Thesis and Support Quick Check • Look for the reference to something in the video, using your highlighter (choose a color you haven’t used) and put a squiggle over the reference. It must have Inside Edition (in italics to get points) VI= 1 pt or 3 pts

  14. Thesis and Support Quick Check • Take out your vocabulary lists! • Look for the vocabulary words that were included – there should be three! • Near where the words are in the paragraph, write out the definition. • Look at how you used the vocabulary word – if it is effective and flows properly and reflects the appropriate meaning, put a plus sign after the definition. If it is awkward and/or incorrectly used, put a minus sign after the definition. • VO= 0 pts or 3 pts – 1 point for each vocab word

  15. Argumentation Check Toulmin? Or Rogerian?

  16. Final Evaluation • You will now evaluate the paragraph using our rubric! Somewhere on the front (or the back if you don’t have room) please write: C O E MU

  17. Final Evaluation – Using a 5 (as the highest) and 1 (as the lowest), evaluate for each of the rubric areas. Include 2-3 sentences of explanation next to each rubric area! Be sure you are clear!

  18. Finally . . . . • Add up your scores! You should put your total points you received over the total number of points – which was: 58 points!
