  1. PURITY EFFICIENCY Laser Ion Source Cryogenic techniques ? Manipulation Laser spectroscopy Presentation of LoI for JRA-8: I.D. Moore (JYFL) Low energy beam PREPARATION MANIPULATION SPECTROSCOPY PRECISION CONTROL LoI presentation, Joint EURONS-EURISOL Town Meeting, Helsinki, Sept. 19, 2007

  2. Selectivity Emittance Temporal Efficiency Selectivity Purity Efficiency Emittance Temporal Why is this JRA innovative? A combination of modern technologies and new developments which bring together the laser and trap communities: Decay spectroscopy Cryogenic techniques RF technology Trap developments RF technology Ion source / Gas catcher Cooler/ buncher Laser spectroscopy Laser developments LoI presentation, Joint EURONS-EURISOL Town Meeting, Helsinki, Sept. 19, 2007

  3. The existing access facilities will benefit: ISOLDE – CERN JYFL – Jyväskylä GANIL-SPIRAL – Caen Louvain-la-Neuve KVI – Groningen GSI - Darmstadt What benefits to EU Nuclear Structure and to whom? LASER and TRAP communities develop and optimize the spectroscopic tools that will make more efficient use of the available beams. DIRECT BENEFITto nuclear structure experiments that rely on purelow and high energy radioactive ion beams withprecisecontrol on spatialandtemporalproperties These developments have a clear impact on European Nuclear Structure physics – probing the evolution of nuclear structure further from stability (shapes, sizes, electromagnetic moments, spectroscopic factors), pure sources for high precision decay spectroscopy… LoI presentation, Joint EURONS-EURISOL Town Meeting, Helsinki, Sept. 19, 2007

  4. Are there overlaps with other EU activities? NO overlaps exist with other EU-funded research activities. Essentially all expertise in the laser and trap community within Europe is combined within this Joint Reseach Activity. The participants will benefit within this activity from the sharing of technology/information/young researchers. The core goals in this JRA (purity/selectivity/efficiency – and utilizing the resultant radioactive ion beams using lasers and Penning traps) have a synergy with the two communities. Projects that will benefit from this JRA: ISOLDE – RILIS/collaps, mAster (Mainz), Lumière (SPIRAL), sPEcOLor (Orsay), ISOLTRAP, WITCH and NICOLE at ISOLDE, LPC-Trap at GANIL, JYFLTRAP. LoI presentation, Joint EURONS-EURISOL Town Meeting, Helsinki, Sept. 19, 2007

  5. Who are the participants on this new JRA? • K.U. Leuven, Belgium • IPN – Orsay, IN2P3, France • GANIL - France • Mainz, Germany • JYFL, Finland • ISOLDE, CERN, Switzerland • GSI – Darmstadt, Germany • University of Manchester, UK • KVI – Groningen, The Netherlands • Giessen, Germany • LPC-Caen, France Associate partners: Gatchina – Russia, Oak Ridge, TRIUMF, MSU, ANL, RIKEN. Thus we attract sharing of knowledge and expertise on a worldwide level – not just within Europe. LoI presentation, Joint EURONS-EURISOL Town Meeting, Helsinki, Sept. 19, 2007
