History • In 1790, the French Academy of Sciences was asked to come up with a uniform system of measurement. • The meter was first based off of the line of longitude that runs from the North Pole through Barcelona, Spain. It was one ten-millionth of that distance. Today it’s based off of the speed of light • In 1889, a bar made out of platinum and iridium was created and is still stored in a vault in Sèvres, France. • In 1960, the metric system was standardized and renamed the SI System (Systeme International d'Unites).
