  • Wanting a swift end to the war and hearing the success of the Manhattan Project, Truman made the decision to drop the atomic bomb.
  • August 6, 1945, a plane called the Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Instantly, 80,000 Japanese citizens were vaporized. Later an additional 100,000 perished from burns and radiation sickness.
  • August 9, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, 40,000 Japanese people perished.
