  4. Missing Letters • Can not = Can’t • I will = I’ll • They have = They’ve • We are = We’re

  5. The case of IT • Only use and apostrophe for it if you mean ‘it is’ • It is a lovely day = It’s a lovely day • I had no homework today because it is my birthday = I had no homework today because it’s my birthday • Use its when you need to imply possession or ownership e.g. • The cat drank its milk • The army sent its soldiers to help the situation

  6. Remember!! • Apostrophes are NEVER used to indicate the plural! • They show: ownership and missing letters!

Practise Time Put the apostrophes in the right place in these sentences. • The markers are Emmas. • After school Im going to Marias house. • It was my brothers birthday last week. • Ive two brothers and three sisters. • I can’t go out because its raining. • Itllbe the summer holidays soon, Im excited. • Im looking forward to going home. • Youre very funny. • Its your bag, isnt it? • Ill go home when The Simpsons is over. BE CAREFUL!! CHECK YOUR WORK!

Task… • Copy out and punctuate the following piece of writing. • You will need to think about use of apostrophes, capital letters, full stops, speech marks… all sorts of punctuation! it was a cold sunday morning id been lying awake for a while ididnt want to get up mum yelled get up or itll be too late to go shopping theres always a queue to park at the weekend i jumped up and ran to the bathroom my brother joe was waiting downstairs he offered to drive we went in mums car as joes was nearly out of petrol and he didnt want to have to stop at the garage to fill up we went passed my mate lauras house and she was sat on the lawn sunbathing ill ring you tonight she yelled as we slowed down outside her house ididnt buy much as idont have much money at the moment and besides there wasnt much i fancied anyway everything was expensive or ugly and idont want to waste money on things idont really need at the moment mum bought a skirt and said shell lend it to me if i want but we dont really have the same taste so idont think i ever will but its nice of her to offer
