  3. Bibliography Sources used in researching a particular topic.

  4. Resources • Books • Journal Articles • Websites • Periodicals • Newspaper articles • Audio/Video resources (dvds, podcasts, television shows, documentaries,etc.)

  5. Putting it all together Annotated Bibliography = a summary and/or evaluation of resources used in research.

  6. Types of ABs • Summarize • Assess • Reflect

  7. Summarize • What are the main points made by the author(s)? • What arguments are the author(s) making in the resource? • How will I describe what the article is about, if somebody asks?

  8. Assess • Is the article useful? • How does it compare with the other resources? • Is it reliable? • Is it biased or objective?

  9. Reflect • How does this article fit with what I am trying to ascertain? • How can I use this resource? • Is it helpful? Does it help me shape my arguments? • Does it make me think any differently (a different ‘take’ on your topic)?

  11. Read, Encode, Annotate, Ponder • R Read the text. Jot down the title and author • E Encode the text by putting the main ideas in your own words/language • A Annotate the text by writing a statement that summarizes the important points • P Ponder the text by thinking and talking about what you learned. Ask yourself why the author wrote the text. What do you think the author hopes you’ll learn?

Value of Annotated Bibliographies • Readers have to discriminate & synthesize what the author is saying • Readers have to restate text in their own words • Encourages reflective thinking • Annotations ensure meaningful reading and encourage clear and concise thinking and writing • Annotations enhance reader's knowledge base as well as improve thinking and writing skills
