Launching EDU-CANADA 2006Defining our mandate and activities Edu-Canada was created with four key pillars: • coordinate the efforts of Canadian missions abroad in education promotion; • facilitate relations and resource development between provinces, NGOs and Canadian missions abroad; • promote Canadian education at signature events; • coordinate a consistent brand and strategy. Edu-Canada is part of the International Education and Youth Division and aligns its efforts with other DFAIT programs such as scholarships and Canadian studies.

International StudentsWhy international mobility matters • Enriched learning and research with international perspectives; • Future partners in trade, political relations and global leadership; • International students contribute an estimated $5 billion in Canada annually through tuition, living expenses, travel while in Canada and visits from family abroad (2004 estimate); • International students can work off-campus while studying, to fill critical labour market gaps in regions and economic sectors in Canada; • International students in Canada are a desirable source of potential immigrants to fill skills shortages in Canadian communities; • Researchers and faculty on exchanges can be recruited to fill places left by retiring faculty at post-secondary institutions.

EDU-CANADA Proposal Creation and implementation of a Canadian education brand • Brand will be used by missions, provinces, NGOs and institutions, according to pre-approved guidelines • Established as a collaborative arrangement with the provinces and territories given education jurisdiction Enhancement of the Edu-Canada Portal • Consult with provinces and stakeholders on portal content • Integrate web content from all provinces and territories • Integrate the portal on all web sites of our missions around the world Improving Industry’s access to the Edu-Canada network • Improve industry access to DFAIT information and services • Facilitate contacts with education officers at missions abroad Building international linkages • Canadian presence at signature events (NAFSA, EAIE, APAIE, etc.) • Promote international use of Canadian curricula Concentrate our resources where needed • Set priority markets for Canada • Open new/emerging markets where we have opportunities • Market intelligence reports for priority and other markets

Coordinating supportCanadian missions abroad Edu-Canada liaises with officers in all missions abroad to provide support, coordination and funding for initiatives that include: • Enhanced Canadian presence at education fairs • Organization of new education fairs • Regional missions/tours • Journalist missions • Translation of promotional material into local languages • Print advertising • Networking events • Enhanced web presence at missions • Outreach at local institutions • Support for core Trade Commissioner Services to clients
