  1. Jobcentre Plus support for the Armed Forces, their Families and Veterans 23rd November 2010 Allan Clifford Callum Grigor

  2. Jobcentre Plus Support As part of the response to the MoD command paper, ‘The Nation’s Commitment: Cross-Government Support to our Armed Forces, their Families and Veterans’ (published July 2008), Jobcentre Plus has: • Deployed an Armed Forces Champion in each district; • Relaxed eligibility entitlements to certain Employment Programmes for serving members of the Armed Forces and their families; and • Agreed to work with the Armed Forces to create an online one-stop-shop for jobs and training.

  3. Introduced in December 2009, formally launched in March 2010 48 Champions - one in each Jobcentre Plus District Put in place to maintain Jobcentre Plus’ commitment to support the Armed Forces, their Families and Veterans, and raise the profile of the support available through Jobcentre Plus The main role of the Armed Forces Champions is to: be the key link between Jobcentre Plus and the Armed Forces Community in the District; have up to date knowledge on the Armed Forces issues in their area; monitor the joint working arrangements already in place between Jobcentre Plus and the Armed Forces; and be first point of contact for all District service personnel issues. Armed Forces Champions

  4. Work very closely with the Ministry of Defence’s Career Transition Partnership, who are under contract to the MoD to provide support to service leavers – resettlement advice / jobsearch / training activity Making links to other providers and charities in the area who are better placed to provide specialist support, for example, the Royal British Legion, Veterans Welfare Service etc. Ensure Jobcentre Plus teams and advisers are made aware of, and work to meet, the particular needs of some service partners in relation to training and softer skills such as confidence building activities Armed Forces Champions

  5. Identify employers prepared to offer employment to service leavers and/or their partners Work with new local outlets of major national employers, close to military establishments, to facilitate employment opportunities for service personnel and their partners Increase awareness of the services available from the European Employment Service (EURES) and the network of EURES Advisers, who can provide advice and assistance on vacancies and living and working conditions to service families preparing for a European overseas posting Arrange for visits to Armed Forces establishments to give information about Jobcentre Plus support, including how to access benefits, local labour market information etc. Armed Forces Champions

  6. Based at District level and are not customer facing staff, and so work closely with their colleagues at regional and local Jobcentre level to draw on their expertise as required For example, there is a Labour Market & Recruitment Adviser in every Jobcentre who is the expert on the local labour market and therefore better placed to visit Armed Forces establishments and provide detailed information about employers and recruitment practices in the area If any member of the Armed Forces community wishes to bring an employment related issue to the attention of their local champion, they do this via their nominated Service Focal Point / Unit Chain of Command, HIVE or via their local Jobcentre Plus office Armed Forces Champions

  7. In previous years, the Employment Service (as was) had a centralised policy team, which liaised closely with the MoD and arranged/provided services directly to forces personnel based in the UK and abroad As our services have evolved and modernised, the centralised team has been replaced by a network of national and local: Account managers who work closely with larger employers to help address recruitment needs; and External relations managers to help make sure Jobcentre Plus works closely with key partners to the benefit of our shared customers. While we do not have a bespoke service for ex-service personnel, all customers who are looking for work can make a claim for Jobseeker’s Allowance Jobcentre Plus Support for Veterans and their families
