Why did we think of a change? • To avoid memorization as the lowest • level of thinking and raise the standard of • learners thinking to higher levels • “ evaluation , analysis etc…” • The new text books “Target English” • More focus on learners’ production. • To give due care to Literature Time , which • is neglected by most teachers.

  5. Unit 1 – Lesson 5 (The Olympic Games ) • "Every four years, the finest athletes in the world gather in one place to compete against each other. This gathering, known as the Olympic Games, is the most celebrated sporting festival in the world. During this event, the Olympic flag is flown freely together with the flags of the participating countries." • a. What do the five rings of the Olympic flag represent? • b. As a participant in the Olympic Games, tell a news reporter what the colors on Kuwait‘sflag represent.

  6. Unit 3 – Lesson 5 ( Deserts ) • "Deserts are areas, often covered with sand, ice or rocks, where there are very little rain, not many plants and a lot of resources. To survive, people search for 'oases' to live in, whereas animals and plants have to adapt to stay alive." a. In deserts, why are "oases" considered the most suitable places to live in? b. How do animals and plants adapt to survive in the desert?

  7. Unit 6 – Lesson 5 ( Life in space ) • "Astronauts spend a long time in space. They do a lot of the same things we do here on Earth. They eat, drink, wear clothes, exercise, work and sleep just like we do. However, they do these things in a different way. For astronauts living in space is like a camping trip they have to be always prepared for. " a. Give three reasons why being in space is like camping.

We also need to learn about our culture and the world around us.“ a-In what way has new technology improved our lives? b-Explain how humans learn to communicate. • Unit 9 – Lesson 1 ( Island Life ) • "In 1963 a volcano erupted off the coast of Iceland. And over the next few days an island was born. Scientists studied this new island where there were no animals or plants. Forty years later over 60 kinds of plants are growing there and there are many insects and birds.“ • a-Explain how life of animals and plants develop on islands. • b-Define an island and give one example of a Kuwaiti island.

But it is not only about dramatic new ideas, it is also about making gradual improvements to existing ideas.“ a-What should a car designer do if he wants to create a more comfortable car? b-"Everyone is creative." Do you agree / disagree ? Justify your answer.

"Stars in his Eyes" by Raja T Nasr • "From a boy who had science in his blood and stars in his eyes, Galileo grew to be a great man who opened the beauties of the heaven to people on Earth.“ a- As a child, what difficulties and discouragement did Galileo meet that could have prevented him from achieving his goals and ambition? b- In your point of view, how could Galileo open the beauties of heaven to people on earth?

  13. "Silas Mariner" by George Eliot • "After being accused of a crime he didn't commit, Silas Marner left his village to another where he worked very hard and collected many gold coins. Unfortunately, all his gold was stolen but this didn't stop him from doing good deeds and finally he was rewarded for that.“ a- If you were Silas Mariner, would you leave your country to another because of being accused of a crime you are sure you didn't commit? Why? Why not? b- What good deed did Silas do? How was he rewarded at the end?

  14. "A sound in the Air" by Raja T Nasr • "People laughed at Marconi all through his life because he had such big ears. But it is possible that he heard sounds through those ears which other people couldn't hear." a-"Sounds can be made to travel, if they are given a push by electricity." Explain ! b-In your opinion, why are radios important in our life?

Unit 2 – Lesson 1 (Storytelling ) • "Telling stories is an ancient art but telling a story aloud and writing a story require different sets of skills." a- What skills should you have to be a good story teller ? b- In your point of view, what do you need to do to write a good story? Unit 3 – Lesson 3 (Holidays) A holiday is a special day marking a special event. People can celebrate holidays in different ways. They choose how to spend their holiday to suit their liking, preferences and ambitions." a- What are the types of holidays ? b- How do people celebrate their holidays?

Unit 6 – Lesson 3 ( All about water ) • " In poor countries ,women and girls, who are usually responsible for water, waste energy and time fetching water instead of working to improve their lives." a- In your opinion, how can you help in saving water? b- Why do we have to look after the world's supply of fresh water? Unit 7 – Lesson 4 ( Problem solving in the real world ) "We all experience problems and we spend a lot of time and effort trying to solve them, but what is a problem? A problem is defined in a very positive way. It is any situation where you have an opportunity to make a difference or an improvement." a- What does the phrase "problem solving" mean to you ? • b- Write two features of problem solving .

Unit 9 – Lesson 1 ( Emergency & rescue ) "Earthquakes happen when two massive earth ' plates ' move past each other .When the plates stick, pressure builds up, and the ground is shaken powerfully“ a- What damages do earthquakes cause ? b- How can the dangers of an earthquake be reduced ? Unit 11 – Lessons 5 & 6 ( Happiness ) "The World Database of happiness have found that people in the west haven’t got happier in the past 50 years despite massive improvements in their standards of living" a- "Some psychologists have identified three elements to happiness." Comment ! b- In your opinion, what could be the sources of your happiness ?

  20. " Around the World in Eighty Days" "One day Phileas Fogg employed a new servant, Passepartout, a young Frenchman. Mr Fogg took out his watch and said, " From this moment, twenty- nine minutes past eleven on the morning of Wednesday, October2nd, 1872, you are in my service." Episode 1 " Mr. fogg is a man of regular habits who lived his life according to a strict routine . " a- Are you for or against being too strict ? Why? b- Imagine you were Mr. Fogg, what equipment would you take with you in the journey around the world? Episode 3 "Your master robbed the Bank of England of £55,000. If I catch him, I will get a reward of two thousand pounds. I will share it with you if you help me." a- Who said these words? To whom? In what occasion ? b- If you were in that situation, would you accept the offer? Why?

  21. Episode 4 Passepartaut had his own ticket, but he had no money and he did not know what to do. When the Carnatic arrived in Yokohama on November13th , Passepartout walked the streets. Somehow he had to get food and money." a- Imagine that you were Passepartout, what would you do to find food and money? b- Would you accept the job offered to Passepartout? Why? Why not? • Episode 5 Mr. Fogg began to think he could not succeed. He was stuck in snow in the middle of America on a train that could not move. But all was not lost!" a- How did Mr .Fogg and his friends solve this problem? b- If you were caught in a snow storm, what should you do?

By travelling around the world from west to east, Mr. Fogg had completed his journey in just over seventy-nine days and he proved it could be done.“ a- Would you agree to challenge although you might take risks and face a lot of problems? b- At the end of the story, Verne ( The writer ) seems to be giving the message that the attainment of love can lead to greater happiness than any amount of wealth. Do you think that this message has been delivered ? Explain your point of view.
