  1. Cometothe well Jn. 4:1-30

  2. Some history… • Assyrian king took Israel into captivity • Samaria was, at the time, the capital • King repopulated Samaria with foreigners • Jews intermarried foreigners; children are ½ Jew • Half-Jews were known as Samaritans • Samaritans believed in God of Abraham, Isaac, etc • Worshipped at Gerazim not Zion • Only believed in 1st 5 books of OT

  3. Jesus and Samaritans… • Scripture clearly indicates he did not hold them in contempt: • Healed a Samaritan leper (Lk 17: 11-19) • Parable of the Good Samaritan (Lk 10:25+) • Wouldn’t let disciples call down fire on a Samaritan village that had treated Jesus poorly (Lk 9: 51+) • Chose specifically to travel thru Samaria to speak to the woman at the well • Instructed apostles to take gospel to Samaria

  4. The Samaritan woman… • She’s been married 5x/currently living with a man • She is rejected by her community, women in particular (v7) • She was lonely and hungry for a meaningful relationship (v11) • She was teachable (v15) • She was spiritually sensitive (v19) • She was looking for redemption (v25) • She was an evangelist (v28-29)

  5. What no one talks about… • Why had she already had 5 husbands? • Her infidelity? • Their infidelity? • Why was she an outcast by the women? • Where were her own daughters? • Where was a son to take her in? • She was under the curse of barrenness! (Ex, Deut, Ps) • God had “shut up her womb.”

  6. The church is having an affair… • It’s called “idolatry” – when our heart is connected to and/or captivated by something other than the Lord. …it takes precedence over the Lord…. • 1 Cor 10:7 “And do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink and stood up to play.” • 1 Jn 5:21 “Little children, guard yourselves from idols.”

  7. The church is thirsty… • Water, water everywhere…. • ….but not a drop to drink! • We are a thirsty people: • …for bigger, better, newer…. • …for more entertainment & pleasure • …for more satisfaction in life • …for more comfort & assurance • …for more security & stability • The world’s “water” is counterfeit - it will never satisfy

  8. Jesus satisfies… • Jn 7: 37-39 “Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying ‘If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, From his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water. But He spoke of the Spirit whom those who believed in Him were to receive…”

  9. The church is the barren woman… • The chief value of an OT woman before marriage was her chastity – after marriage, it was her fertility • Barrenness was considered a curse/punishment BUT it was also God’s opportunity to show Himself mighty • Is 54:1+ “Shout for joy, o barren one, you have borne no child; break forth into joyful shouting and cry aloud, you who have not travailed; for the sons of the desolate one will be more numerous than the sons of the married woman, says the Lord.”

  10. Author of “Radical”

  11. The challenge… Who/what is your first love? * How thirsty are you? * Do you long to be full of the life of and passion for God?

  12. Come to the well! • Joel 2:28 “And it will come about after this that I will pour out my Spirit upon all mankind; and your sons and daughters will prophesy; your old men will dream dreams; your young men will see visions; and even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.” • Not by might, or power BUT BY MY SPIRIT…
