Almost all countries have English listed as their official language. Not just that, the English language is spoken and learned in over 50 countries all across the globe. Unfortunately, the English language has not been treated as just a language. Instead, in many parts of the world, it has become a measurement of a person’s intelligence and background. Truth be told, English is just a language. While a lot of people think that being able to speak and read the language makes you smarter and helps you be confident all around the world, English is not a measure of intelligence. In a lot of countries where English is not an official language, people who can communicate in fluent English are considered to be more educated and believed to have a higher level of intelligence and societal status. What is even worse is that even in countries where English is announced as an official language, people who lack English speaking skills are treated differently and considered to be inferior. Language Is Not A Measure Of Intelligence Not just English, but any other language is not a measure of intelligence. This trend of considering English speaking skills as a measure of intelligence and societal status can have severe implications, especially on the minds of children. People in many countries suffer from the consequences of not being able to speak English fluently. This must be changed early on through the school system where students must be taught that English is just a language and also that English is not a measure of intelligence. Teaching students that it is wrong to judge people based on how fluently one can speak English will lead them to get rid of this notion.
