What is WaKIDS?

The Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS) is a transition process that helps to ensure a successful start to the K-12 experience and connect the key adults in a child’s life.

Three Components:

  • Family connection welcomes families into the Washington K-12 system as partners in their child’s education.
  • Whole-child assessment gives kindergarten teachers information about the social/emotional, physical, cognitive, language, literacy and mathematics development of the children in their classrooms, so they may tailor their instruction to the individual needs of each child.
  • Early learning collaboration aligns practices of early learning professionals and kindergarten teachers to support smooth transitions for children.
why wakids
Why WaKIDS?

WaKIDS is a process that can help:

  • Students and their families transition to kindergarten
  • Inform instruction
  • Build collaboration across early learning and K–12 sectors (in part, through common assessments and discussion of data)
  • Inform school, district and state policy

Support the full WaKIDS state reimbursement of 3 days per calendar year to complete assessment as recommended by the state.

  • Extend the opportunity for all schoolwide Title buildings to use WaKIDS assessment in Pre-K programs.
  • Support the option for buildings to use WaKIDS two times a year, fall and winter, and use this assessment in the spring for students below benchmark targets.
  • Use the WaKIDS data for progress monitoring students and reporting to parents. Goal Setting form will not be required if WaKIDS is used.
