Welcome and Introduction The Academy for Education Development (AED) welcomes you to the Middle School Partners in Leadership Program A USDOE-funded program that provides professional development around leadership and middle grades expertise to participating Principals and Assistant Principals

  3. The AED Middle Start Leadership Project (MSLP) • Aligned & interconnected programs build strong foundation in school leadership & young adolescent development • Partners in Leadership: Two-year program to build leadership and middle grades expertise among principals and APs • Leadership Fellows: Intensive 12-month program to prepare experienced APs to transition to a middle grades principal position • Anchored by: • The NYCDOE School Leadership Competencies • Middle Start Principles and Practices • The Blueprint for Middle School Success

Why this project in the Bronx? • Economically distressed • 52% of children (ages 5-17) are under the poverty line • Schools are historically poorly served/supported • NCLB identified 133 as being In Need of Improvement • We must close the achievement gap • Bronx middle grades students struggle to meet city and state content and performance standards • Added challenge to be an effective leader • Understand instructional and managerial leadership AND how above conditions exacerbate the challenge of creating a high-performing middle grades school

  5. Why AED? • Over a decade of experience in middle-grades school reform. • Designed a comprehensive school reform initiative. • “Middle Start” has transformed high-poverty, high-minority middle-grades schools into high-performing learning environments.

Partners in Leadership:Program Outcomes • Develop the leadership skills of principals and APs to effectively manage high-need urban middle schools. • Strengthen the abilities of principals and APs to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of students in high-need urban middle schools. • Retain and empower highly qualified leaders in high-need urban middle schools.

  7. Why Join the AED Partners in Leadership Program? APs and Principals • Learn and practice leadership skills that are directly relevant to work as an effective middle grades leader in urban, high-poverty, high-minority schools • Connect with other leaders through Cohort-Based work • Study with national experts through the MSLP leadership Institutes • Aligned with NYC DOE Leadership Competencies and AED Principles and Practices Principals only • Participate in an all-expenses-paid annual Leadership Development Institutes at the Center for Creative Leadership in North Carolina • Improve coaching skills and become eligible to serve as a mentor-principal to AED Leadership Fellows (Principals only) • Principals that coach AED Leadership Fellows may receive stipends, attend Harvard Principals Center, and participate in the National Principals Leadership Institute

How Does the Partners in Leadership Program work? • Two-Year Commitment for participating schools • Participation by the school Principal and at least one Assistant Principal (with team participation to some institutes) • Middle Start Study Institute • Cohort-based monthly sessions for Assistant Principals (evening) • Convenient summer institutes for Principals • Leadership Institutes • Principal-Focused Support • Annual Center for Creative Leadership Institute • Coaching Program

Middle Start Study Institute • Summer Institute Meetings for Principals • Monthly Institute Meetings for Assistant Principals • Focus on addressing middle grade needs of poor and minority youth • Four Core Elements • Reflective review and self-assessment • Effective small learning communities • Rigorous curriculum, instruction and student assessment • Distributed leadership and sustainable partnerships

Partners in Leadership Institutes: Year 2 • 3rd Semester Institutes • Data and Accountability • Developing a Professional Learning Community • How to Work Less, Play More, and Still Get the Job Done in a Normal School Week • Middle Start Workshops and Presentations • Summer Institutes • Data and Accountability • Middle Start Study: Part 2 (Principals only) • 4th Semester Institutes • Academic Rigor • Accountability for Results • Middle Start Workshops and Presentations

Principals Leadership Development • Annual Leadership Development Institute with the Center for Creative Leadership • 1st year: Education Leadership Development Program • Focus on Self-Assessment, 360 Degree Assessment, Knowing Your Leadership Style, Working with Others • 2nd year: Leading Change Program • Focus on Strategies for Facing Change and Leading a Community through Change

  13. Principal Coaches • Two semesters of coaching support • Serve as coach for new middle grades principal • Attend Harvard Principals Center or National Principals Leadership Institute • Receive coaching stipend • Support AED Leadership Fellows Program: • Participate in Fellows selection process • Observe Fellows in residencies • Review Fellows’ leadership portfolios

Partners in Leadership – Important Dates • Participating School Applications Due: February 5th • Principals Middle Start Study: Summer 2009 and 2010 • Assistant Principals Middle Start Study Begins: March 4th • Classes Meet 4:30 – 8:30 pm at Middle School 80 • Center for Creative Leadership Institute (Greensboro, North Carolina): Tentatively Scheduled for April 27 -29, 2009

  15. Partners in Leadership Application and Selection Process • Written Application are due by February 5 • Principal Essay • Assistant Principal Essay • Principal’s Commitment Letter • Notifications of acceptance will go out by February 16
