  3. NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS Ex: some schools, medial care facilities, churches Work in a business-like way to make the best use of scarce resources. Main difference: Do NOT seek financial gain for their members Many are legally incorporated to take advantage of UNLIMITED LIFE. Do NOT…issue stock, pay dividends, pay income taxes Difficult to analyze economically because their value of products is NOT easy to measure.
  4. COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATIONS cooperative, co-op A voluntary association of people formed to carry on some kind of economic activity that will benefit its members 3 types: consumer service producer
  5. Consumer Cooperative A voluntary association that buys bulk amounts of goods, such as food and clothing, on behalf of its members (for a lower price) Examples?
  6. Service Cooperative Deals with services rather than goods Offer members insurance, credit, and other similar services Examples? Credit union – a service co-op made up of employees from a particular company or government agency
  7. Producer Cooperative helps members sell their products most are made up of farmers Examples: Ocean Spray Sunmaid
  8. LABOR UNIONS Formed to work for its members’ interests in various employment matters The union speaks for workers when disputes arise over pay, working hours, etc. Collective bargaining – refers to the negotiations between representatives of labor and management EX: NEA, AFT
  9. PROFESSIONAL AND BUSINESS ASSOCIATIONS Professional association – a group of people in a specialized occupation that works to improve the working conditions, skill levels, and public perceptions of the profession Examples? AAUP – professors ABA – lawyers Business associations…businesses organize to promote their collective interest Chamber of commerce Better Business Bureau

GOVERNMENT??? links consumers and resources direct role… Produces and distributes certain goods and services to consumers TVA – electricity National defense indirect role…. acts as an umpire to make sure the economy operates as it should….public utilities grants money to ppl. in the form of Social Security, veterans’ benefits, financial aid, unemployment
