Photo Here Wall Wall Info Info Photos Photos Songs/Videos Songs/Videos What’s Happening, Elvis Presley Share Ms. Rubinlicht: Hey Elvis! My favorite song of yours is “Suspicious Minds”, can you tell me more about it? Elvis: Why yes Ms. Rubinlicht! It was recorded in 1969, and was off the album Elvis’ 30 #1 Hits Ms. Rubinlicht: I really enjoy how the song has a steady moderate beat throughout, except during the bridge, when the tempo slows. Elvis: The dynamics also get softer there to create a more emotional effect, then build to the end of the song. Ms. Rubinlicht: I can tell that this song has an emotional mood, and seems very bittersweet/heartbreaking, but what is it about? Elvis: It’s about two people in a relationship who cannot trust each other. It seems as if the singer has cheated on his girlfriend before, but she still does not trust him. She constantly asks him his whereabouts and is suspicious of women who are just his friend. They love each other, but it seems as if their relationship is not built on trust. Ms. Rubinlicht: Is that what you meant when you wrote: “So, if an old friend I know/Stops by to say hello/Would I still see suspicion in your eyes? Here we go again/Asking where I've been/You can't see these tears are real/I'm crying (Yes I'm crying) We can't go on together/With suspicious minds (suspicious minds) And be can't build our dreams/ On suspicious minds” Elvis: Exactly! Some interesting facts about this song is that it was my last #1 hit. It was originally written for another artist, but failed miserably, lucky they had the “King” to record it (at 4am!). Ms. Rubinlicht: Thanks Elvis! I love you!!! I learned a lot of interesting information about him and his life. One piece of information that I find important is that Elvis was the first white Rock n Roll artist, and he broke many racial barriers. He had a hard career, and was micromanaged by his manager Colonel Tom Parker, who allowed Elvis to use drugs. Elvis is influential as he is probably the most popular musician next to the Beatles. He has influenced many musicians and pop culture. Citations Warren, Holly. "Elvis Presley." Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock n Roll. New York City: 2001. "Elvis Presley." Wikipedia.
