D2 Helpsheet • You are required to evaluate the impact of European law on English law • Read the article from the CBBC website: • Who are pro-Europeans and what do they think are the benefits of EU membership? • Who are the Euro sceptics and what do they think are the problems of EU membership? • Read the BBC news articles and consider the following: • “EU rules put patients at risk” • Summarise the main facts of the article Is it fair that doctors in any EU country can work in the UK without restriction? What could the benefits of this be? What are the problems highlighted? “European Commission financial tax opposed by UK” Summarise The main facts of the article Is it fair that all member states contribute financially to support the economic crisis in Europe as proposed by the European Commission? What could the benefits of this be? What could be the problems? • Using these articles, perform a cost/benefit analysis of EU membership ie do the benefits of membership outweigh the problems or vice versa? • Reflecting on your research in this area, do you think parliamentary sovereignty is completely lost by being part of the EU? What evidence in the articles you have read supports this? Do we have a choice about being a member of the EU?
