  2. The Battle Begins • ~1200 BC Philistines settled along the coast of current day Israel • ~1200 BC Jews settle in the mountains of current day Israel • Old Testament states that it is the Jewish Homeland promised by God (Moses) • Clash! • Kingdom of Israel established ~970BC • David & Goliath

  3. Diaspora 73AD • ~60 BC: Rome has conquered the Kingdom of Israel • Example: Story of the Crucifixion of Jesus • 73 AD & 125 AD: the Jewish people rebel against Rome and are defeated • Result: Diaspora: Rome spreads out (disperses) the Jewish population throughout Roman Empire

  4. Effect of Diaspora • Small Jewish communities spread throughout Northern Africa and Europe • Easy targets for persecution

  5. Land of Palestine • ~600 AD: Arabs now occupy Palestine • Most become Muslims • Minority of Jews still occupy the area • For the next 1300 + years Muslims run this land

  6. 19th Century • After centuries of persecution, Jews embrace Zionism • Movement to re-establish the Jewish homeland in Palestine • Jewish immigration to Palestine increases • 1914: Jews were ~15% of the population

  7. WWI 1914-1917 • Britain & France agree to divide land won in WWI • Balfour Declaration: British agree to allow Jewish immigrants to settle in Palestine • Jewish immigration increased • Violent Jewish / Palestinian clashes • Britain began to limit immigration

  8. WWII Holocaust 1939-1945 • Over 6 million Jews were massacred in Europe • Zionism increased in hopes of protecting themselves • British / Jews clash over immigration • Britain hands control of Palestine over to the UN

  9. UN PLAN (1947) • UN votes to partition (divide) Palestine • Jewish State • Arab State • Jerusalem is a UN international zone • Jews: Accept proposal • Palestinians: Refused proposal. • Why?

  10. Battle over Israel (1948) • British leave Palestine • Arabs from Jordan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia attack Israel • Why?

  11. Nation of Israel is Created • Israel wins all of the land in dispute • Many Palestinians flee their homes and move Refugee Camps in Egypt’s Gaza Strip and Jordan’s West Bank • Refugee Camps: Camps (tent cities) to house people displaced from their homes • Israel officially becomes a nation

  12. After the War of 1948 Israeli’s call it the War of Independence

  13. Suez Campaign (1956) • Egypt cuts off Israeli shipping through the Suez Canal. Israel takes over the Sinai Peninsula until the UN comes in and the US guarantees Israeli shipping

  14. 6-Day War 1967: • Syria, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon put forces on border to attack. • Israel attacks and takes over several portions of land including the West Bank and Gaza Strip • Result: Refugee camps are now under Israeli control. Israel begins building Settlements. (Jewish cities established in the West Bank and Gaza Strip)
