Europe faces Revolutions • Nationalism-belief that people’s loyalty should be to a nation of those sharing common culture not a king or empire • Conservatives: Wealthy property owners and nobility-monarchs • Liberal: middle class business leaders-more power to elected parliaments-limit voting to educated landowners • Radical: Extend democracy to all people-ideals of FR-liberty, equality, brotherhood

  3. Nation-state • Nation had independent government, defends territory and way of life • Defining a Nation-state: • Culture • History • Language • Territory • Nationality-common ethnic ancestry • Religion

Pro/Cons of Nationalism • Pro • Overcome differences for common good • Overthrown colonial rule • Democracy • Competition spurs technological advancements • Con • Forced assimilation of minority cultures • Ethnic cleansing • Rise of extreme nationalistic movements (Nazism) • Competition leads to warfare

  5. Greek Independence • Belonged to Ottoman Empire-the Balkans • Modern-day: Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and former Yugoslavia

  6. Greek Independence • Greek Orthodox Christians ruled by Ottoman Muslims • Flashback- • Roman Catholic Church split ~500 AD over dispute of icons while under Byzantine Empire • Later Muslims took over region during the spread of Islam religion
