  2. Fort Sumter • April 1861 - Attack on Fort Sumter. Anderson offered to surrender, but only after he had exhausted his supplies. His offer was rejected, and on April 12, the Civil War began with shots fired on the fort. Fort Sumter eventually was surrendered to South Carolina.

  3. Battle of fort sumter • April 12th 1861 Brigadier general Beauregard ordered the attack on fort Sumter . • It lasted two days without casualties .

Confederate states • 11 states were called confederates • Brigadier General Beauregard commanded the confederate army • Colonel Jackson held confederate ground against Union forces allowing Beauregard’s troops to gather reinforcements . • Confederates , 23,231 • 44,708 killed • 12,693 wounded • 5,830 missing

  10. France • The French wanted influence in Mexico, and it would suit them if there was a new nation, pro-French, in between Mexico and the USA.

  11. Britain • The British increasingly saw the USA as a fast-growing economic rival, and were not displeased to see it divided. Also, some of the older Tories still thought the American Revolution was a bit of cheek, and looked forward to a bit of 'trouble in Paradise'.
