  3. 命名 • 列車名稱繼太魯閣號後，再度向民間徵求命名，過程中從一開始的「太麻里號」一路領先，到後來原住民鄉親不斷透過網路及電話員拉票，「普悠瑪號」最後異軍突起，以8,778票獲得網路票選獲得最高票，而專家評審結果「普悠瑪」號也同樣獲得評審青睞奪得最高分，成為雙料冠軍並獲得這項命名比賽的第一名，而「太麻里號」則在二項中都屈居第二。「普悠瑪」原自卑南語，意味著集合團結的意思，卑南族的英文名稱延用這樣的稱呼「Puyuma」，她也是卑南鄉和臺東市南王部落的習慣稱呼。歌手陳建年在1985年，因哥哥要入伍，便集體創作《故鄉普悠瑪》歡送紀念，這首歌後來改唱成卑南語版，在輕快的民歌風旋律，卻蘊涵幽雅的故鄉情感，收錄在1999年《海洋》專輯，同為南王部落出身的歌手紀曉君也唱紅這首歌曲。普悠瑪列車英文則稱為「Puyuma Express」。
