  1. NKOS Thesaurus Registry Update Gail Hodge Information International Associates, Inc. NKOS Workshop, August 14, 1999

  2. Thesaurus Registry Background • Working group established based on discussions at 1998 workshop • Data elements needed to describe vocabulary resources (KOS) • Based on previous work by Linda Hill and Mike Raugh • Draft issued November 1998

  3. Biodiversity Vocabulary Pilot • Biological Resources Division (BRD) and the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) • Part of the background effort to build CERES/BRD vocabulary for biodiversity and ecosystem science • Developed Access database to the draft registry standard

  4. Lessons Learned • Works better for thesauri than for other vocabularies • Sometimes difficult for cataloger to complete the fields because need to know more in-depth information • Benefit by having owner/creators do the registration • Date needed to be changed to be Y2K compliant

  5. Next Steps for BRD • BRD will modify Access database and continue development of its catalog • Make it available via the NBII • Reconcile the standard with the NBII (FGDC based) metadata standard so the resources can be accessed by the CHM search engine

  6. Suggested Next Steps for the WG • Develop taxonomy for vocabularies • Continue reconciliation of the standard elements with other efforts at registration • Testing of draft by NKOS members • Perhaps approach NISO about hosting a review of the results
