  2. Purpose of the Course • Creating something new requires new thoughts • Creating model of education requires new thinking • Must create new categories of thought • Sometimes uncomfortable • Tendency to change environment or terms to fit cognitive categories

Purpose of the Course • Understand nature of speculative philosophy • Understand relationship of philosophy to science and practice of education • Develop new breed of teacher as basis for building a new practice • Natural sciences – new ideas disseminated in 2 years • Education – new ideas disseminated in 50 years • Science of education should be • Cumulative • Refined

Purpose of the Course • Understand principles of organismic or holistic philosophy • Whitehead’s philosophy is abstract and clear • Must understand basic principles • Major problem in education is fragmentation and incoherence • Without use of basic principles requires unity established through bureaucracy • Jazz vs orchestra; improvisation vs scripting • Example of Yamaha music system educated students

What Is Philosophy? • Generative educators must love and appreciate theory and philosophy • Note: select students with this mindset or attempt to modify basic orientation? • Note: Educators at university level more likely to already have this orientation • Philosophy comes from • Phil – love • Sophia – wisdom • Philosopher – lover of wisdom
