Miles tones of GSM Development • 1982 : Foundation of Group Special Mobile within CEPT (Conference of European Postal and Telecommunication Administrations) • 1991 : Fist GSM-Network start operation / GSM1800 • 1994 : 69 GSM Network operating in 43 countries. • 1997 : Mid 1997 there are 200 worldwide GSM-Networks operating in 109 countries ( > 44 million users)
Miles tones of GSM Development • 2004 : first quarter 2004, total number of GSM subscribers exceed 1 Billion • 2009 : more than 80% of world population uses GSM technology in 218 countries. GSM technology comprise more than 82% of the global mobile communication market share
The GSM system family • GSM380/410/450/480 : GSM System in 400 MHz band; intended to substitute different analog standards • GSM850 : similar to GSM 900 but slightly modified in order to be able to substitute to the American AMPS • GSM900 : original GSM in 900 MHz band • E-GSM900 : Extension of GSM 900 • GSM-R : special for railway appication • GSM1800 : operating in 1800 MHz (DCS1800) • GSM1900 : operating in 1900 MHz ( US Market)
Data Register in GSM system • Home Location Register (HLR) • Calling number, services for which the user is authorized, information of actual location of the user • Visitor Location Register (VLR) • Contains copies of HLR sub-data-sets relating to the foreign users which are actually active in the area corresponding to the MSC
Data Register in GSM system • Authentication Center (AUC) • All data required for authentication of a user (SIM Card key) • Equipment Identity Register (EIR) • Register of IMEI (international mobile station equipment identifier) Color identifier example : White – approved equipment; grey – erroneous or suspect equipment; black – stolen or not authorized equipment
Further 2G Digital Mobile Communication System • D-AMPS : Digital Advance Mobile Phone System ( USDC : US Digital Cellular; NADC : North America Digital Cellular) • CDMAone: first CDMA system • PDC : Personal Digital Cellular ( JDC : Japanese Digital Cellular )
2G+ (2.5G) - Technologies • HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) • Circuit Switching • More efficient • GPRS ( General Packet Radio Service) • Packet switching always on – function • More efficient adaptive channel coding
EDGE ( Enhanced Data Rate for Global (GSM) Evolution) • Key idea : New modulation scheme GSMK • HSCSD using EDGE ECSD ( Enhanced Circuit Switched Data) • GPRS using EDGE EGPRS ( Enhanced General Packet Radio Service)
3G (3rd Generation Mobile Radio Communication System) • First technical Specifications have been release from ITU in 1999 • Further release in project 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) • IMT-2000 : International Mobile Telecommunication – 2000 MHz System • UMTS : Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (T-UMTS / S-UMTS)
3G (3rd Generation Mobile Radio Communication System) • CDMA2000 : Evolutional system from American CDMA-system IS-95 • UWC136 (IS-136-EDGE) : Evolutional system of the American TDMA-systems D-AMPS, extended by EDGE • TD-SCMA: Chinese Proposal, very similar to UTMS (UTMS Ultra-TDD) • DECT+ : Extension of DECT to allow data rates up to 2 MBit/s
Future Perspective • UMTS (3GPP – release 99) • DS-SS, CDMA, FDD, B=5Mhz, 384kBit/s • HSDPA (3GPP – UMTS Release 5) • Based on UMTS, AMC, HARQ • Maximum 14.4MBit/s(down) • HSUPA (3GPP – UMTS Release 6) • Based on UMTS, HDSPA for uplink • Maximum 5.76MBit/s (up)
Future Perspective • HSPA+ (3GPP – UMTS Release 7) • Based on UMTS, 16/64QAM, MIMO • Maximum 28MBit/s (down), maximum 11MBit/s (up) • LTE (long Term Evolution) • OFDM / SC-FDMA; MIMO • > 100MBit/s (down) ; >50MBit/s (up)
