  1. Cellular Respiration COS-3

  2. Cellular Respiration • Process of breaking down food molecules to release energy. • Cellular respiration breaks down food molecules.

  3. http://bioweb.cs.earlham.edu/9-12/cellularrespiration/

  4. 2 Types of Cellular Respiration • Aerobic • Anaerobic

  5. http://68.90.81.6/ScienceTAKS/CELLULAR%20RESPIRATION2.htm

  6. Aerobic Respiration • Energy released is used to create ATP C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy

  7. 3 Phases • Glycolysis • Krebs Cycle • Electron Transport

  8. http://zoology.okstate.edu/zoo_lrc/biol1114/study_guides/scenarios/3-ootf/rainforest.htmlhttp://zoology.okstate.edu/zoo_lrc/biol1114/study_guides/scenarios/3-ootf/rainforest.html

  9. Glycolysis • Occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell • Occurs with or without oxygen • Glucose molecule is broken in half –produces ATP • 3-Carbon sugar is converted to citric acid in the mitochondria of the cell.

  11. Krebs Cycle (Citric Acid Cycle) • Cyclic process that breaks down citric acid. • Produces more ATP

  12. http://zoology.okstate.edu/zoo_lrc/biol1114/study_guides/scenarios/3-ootf/rainforest.htmlhttp://zoology.okstate.edu/zoo_lrc/biol1114/study_guides/scenarios/3-ootf/rainforest.html

  13. Electron Transport Chain • Occurs on the mitochondria’s inner membrane. • Electrons are transferred through a series of carrier proteins. • At the end of the Electron Transport Chain….. • Water is released from cell as a waste product • Energy is released (ATP)

  15. Anaerobic Respiration • Also known as fermentation • Process by which sugars are broken down in the absence of oxygen. • Our muscle cells, fungi, and some bacteria carry out anaerobic respiration. • Lactic acid

  16. Alcoholic Fermentation • Yeast produces ethanol (C2H5OH) • Carbon Dioxide is released- causes holes in bread • Carbon Dioxide gets trapped in dough and causes small bubbles to form resulting in the bread rising. C6H12O6 2 C2H5OH + 2 CO2 + Energy

  17. Alcoholic Fermentation • Produces • Breads • Beer • Wine • Liquor http://bakinghistory.files.wordpress.com/2007/06/sage-angel-bread.jpg

  18. Lactic Acid Fermentation • Animal Cells and some bacteria • Produce lactic acid from glycolysis • Supplies muscles with needed energy • Causes soreness http://www.higstickets.com/images/sox22.jpg

  19. Test on Thursday, March 13, 2008 • BRING A FLASHLIGHT TOMORROW and Dress Appropriately!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! • Read the last section in your workbook on page 81. • Study Table 3.2 and Figure 3.18 on page 82 in your workbook. • Complete Section Review 3 • Sections A-D • Page 82-84 • Due Tomorrow (Wednesday, March 12, 2008)
