  2. Agenda/Topics To Be Covered The students will identify the four long-term causes of the 1st World War by explaining the circumstances that led to war. Announcement: Warm-up Question: Review the chart of page 395 and answer the following: 1. What 2 groups made up the warring powers in 1915? 2. Why do you think the war was called the Great War or the War to End All Wars? Motivation: What do you do when someone insults your friend? What should a country do when an ally is attacked?

World War I Begins Ch. 11 Sec. 1 pgs. 394-401 Long-Term Causes of World War I ANIMAL-assassination, nationalism, imperialism, militarism, alliances, lack of leadership Nationalism National interests and unity should be placed ahead of global cooperation. Foreign affairs should be guided by its own self-interest

Imperialism European powers competed for colonies to supply raw materials and markets for finished products Militarism Nationalism and imperialism caused military budgets to increase Nations wanted to be stronger than a potential enemy Nations developed armed forces as a tool of diplomacy Germany began building its navy in response to the great navy of England

Alliance System Nations of Europe signed treaties of assistance Countries had to help one another out in case of attack 2 major mutual defense treaties Triple Entente (Allies): France, Great Britain, Russia Triple Alliance (Central Powers): Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Ottoman Empire Assassination The powder keg of Europe-Balkan Peninsula Major European powers wanted control in this region

Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austria-Hungary throne was assassinated in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914 This action sets off a chain reaction of foreign involvement that initiates the Great War The Fighting Starts Germany invaded Belgium on August 4, 1914 Britain unable to stop Germany Slowed them at the Marne River in France in September 1914 Trenches were dug for both sides and no-man’s land developed-Trench warfare
