  2. A little introduction… The Atom Song

  3. Early Life • He was born in Cockermouth, England, in 1766 into a Quaker family. • John Dalton was an English teacher, a physicist, as well as a chemist. • He made his living teaching at New College in Manchester.

  4. Fun Facts • He was color-blind and carried out many studies relating to “the vision of colors.” • His brother was also color-blind, which led to him discovering that color-blindness was hereditary. • Daltonism became a term for color-blindness, due to his his research regarding the subject. • He also kept weather records for 57 years. • He usually taught English in his classes.

  5. Atomic Theory • He was the first to put forth the idea that there were different kinds of atoms called elements. He said the elements combine to form ratios. • Dalton’s interest in meteorology led him to research gases, which eventually caused him to develop his atomic theory. • The atomic theory has four different parts describing characteristics all atoms.

  6. Part one • All matter is made of atoms. Atoms are indivisible and indestructible.

  7. Part two • All atoms of a given mass are identical in mass and properties.

  8. Part three • Compounds are formed by a combination of two or more different kinds of atoms.

  9. Part four • A chemical reaction is a rearrangement of atoms.

  10. Modern Atomic Theory • John Dalton’s theories still remain largely true in modern Chemistry. • Dalton’s version of the Atomic Theory really set the table for what we understand today. • The only major addition that has been added to this theory is that atoms can be destroyed by nuclear reactions.

  11. Death • John Dalton suffered two strokes, however continued experimentation and weather observations. In 1844 he fell from his bed and died. • A statue was erected of John Dalton, as well as many things named in his honor.
