  1. Kinesiology Bracelets By Vincent Sbraga and Maurice Clark Due: April 19th Prof. Spaulding

  2. Inventor • The Rodarmel family is responsible for developing the original kinesiology bracelet • The developers included John Rodarmel and his two sons, Troy and Josh. • They invented the Power Balance bracelet in January of 2007

  3. What is a Kinesiology Bracelet? • The kinesiology or power balance bracelet is a thin wristband, which has a hologram film that has been thorough patented process based upon centuries of eastern philosophies.

  4. How does it work? • The actual wristband doesn’t serve a purpose, but the Mylar hologram film allows for you to gain some or all of your full potential during activity. Through body frequency being altered by the film your are able to increase your own level of frequency.

  5. What is frequency? • Frequency of the body is measured in hertz, the SI unit that is equal to one cycle per second. A great example of this is heart beat. If your heart is beating at 120 bpm you have a frequency of 2 Hz in contrast to 60 bpm being 1 Hz. It works upon a ratio depending up the systematic base or factors.

  6. What does body frequency represents? • The normal healthy human body functions at about 63 to 72 hertz. The body’s hertz average is based upon all of the body’s functional systems added together and divided by themselves. Your body frequency can be suppressed by poor health, allergies, and diet. What the bracelet is said to do is help harness all of your possible frequency waves resulting in a better overall you.

  7. Bracelet performance test • http://www.youtube.com/all_comments?v=6gIMxjr3n5U • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlhvgG8lRhk

  8. Other manufactures of the product • Power Band • Monster (the energy drink company) • EFX • Rawlings (the sporting good company) • MLB • NBA

  9. Athletes that back the product • Shaquille O’neal • Matt Kemp • Derrick Rose • Vitor Belfort • Vernon Davis • Ryan Scheckler • Drew Brees • Shane Victorino • And many others that can be found on the business’s website.

  10. Problems with the testing • When Akola isn't wearing the band, the other guy is holding it, so technically, if this works, the black shirt guy is stronger when they try the test without the band. • The excitatory threshold of the Golgi tendon organ’s (GTO’s) is increased, which makes them less likely to send signals to inhibit force fabricated when the muscle has increased tension. This facilitates greater contraction force than normal strength or power exercise, and as a result improves training ability.

  11. Where can you purchase them? • Power Balance bracelets can be mainly purchased online, Foot Locker, Finish Line, Sports Authority, and many other “mom and pop” shops.

  12. Return policy • They do have a 30 day return policy so that in the event that you are not satisfied with the product it can be returned.

  13. Myth?... • Some believe the bracelet doesn’t actually work, but in fact is only a luck charm. • They explain how the luck charm effect works by using a example from a issue of Psychological Science. • In this study a group of golfers where given a golf ball that was supposedly “lucky” and other group was told that their golf ball was normal. • The study should that the group that was given the “special” golf balls made 6.4 out of 10 putts, on average almost two more than the group with the normal golf balls. • A 35% increase on accuracy

  14. Stretch reflex • An issue of concern that was noticed that wasn’t heavily discussed as a possible con in regards to the bracelets claim was the stretch reflex. • During the active work the stretch reflex diminishes as a result of the Golgi tendon organ’s being altered which allows for you to perform better the next time around. • Thus arguing a case that even though the bracelet is present you may already be prepared for the workout. Which means until the performance tests are done in an opposite format the test will only be plausible.

  15. Experiment • Forty-Two Division III athletes split in two groups • Placebo Group • Group that wore the Power Balance bracelet • Two trials of exercises • **Usually the company tests one group who do the exercises first without the band and then again with the bands. • Tested for: • Flexibility • Balance • Strength • Vertical Jump

  16. Experiment • Trial 1 • There was no significant difference between the two groups.

  17. Experiment • Trial 2 • Better scores in Trial 2 compared to Trial 1 but both groups still had similar scores. • Conclusions: • The band was proven to not be effective • Athletes most likely did better the second time because they were more warmed up, with or without the bracelet.

  18. Research Conclusions • The Power Balance wrist bands do not improve your balance and coordination as an athlete • The use of power balance as a good luck charm for athletes heavily suggests that there they are experiencing a placebo effect of using the Power Balance Bracelet. • When it comes to using Power Balance Bracelets, it truly is, “Mind over matter” • The only true and tried method of improving your balance and coordination is through physical activity.

  19. Improving balance, flexibility, and coordination through exercise • Core strength is critical to improving balance, flexibility and coordination • Your core includes abdominal muscles and muscles of back • These muscles serve as the foundation for all upper and lower extremity movements, so essential to put these put these muscles through their full ROM • Your core also serves as your center of your gravity!

  20. Improving Coordination, Flexibility, & Balance through exercise • Stretching(Static or Dynamic) • Yoga • Pilates • Pelvic tilt exercises • Squats • Abdominal and Back exercises • Medicine ball exercises • Resistance bands • Free weights • Running

  21. Key point to remember! • When you attempt to improve your balance, flexibility, and coordination through exercise, it’s important to remember to put your muscles through their full range of motion, and through all possible planes of motion!
