A custom upgrade project for ToF HV system with pixel statistic analysis and readout solutions. Details on progress, recapitulation, timetable, and conclusion are highlighted. Various solutions like DRS4, TBR are discussed for readout upgrade. Challenges, pros, cons, and decisions are presented for each solution. Collaboration meeting in Belgrade in May 2013. Trends in pixel statistics for left and right walls of the system are analyzed.
E N D
Introduction • During last few years it is observed the increasing falling rate of ToF-L/R HV components • CAEN system, good but old! • Decision to make upgrade of the ToF HV system – right side, use leftovers as spare parts to right side • CAEN solution (new system) too expensive ~150 kEUR
Introduction • Decided to make custom made distributors(~5 times cheaper!) in Belgrade • Contract signed on end of March (first phase,2 crates, 22 distributors, 15kEUR, half of system) • Waiting for the money, R&D started in June, production in July
Current status All hardware finished! Working on communication and software
Timetable • End of May: Put phase 2 into production (hardware) Finishing microcontroller program • End of August: Finishing hardware for phase 2 Finishing integration and PC control program • End of year: Integration with DCS!
Recapitulation • June 2012 – 5 distributors returned from CAEN andat immediately returned to system • Only 3 spare • 30.7. Fail of the CAEN CRATE – replaced • 3 slot malfunctioned, at once replaced by 3 custom made distributors (leaving 3 more spare distributors) • 6.8. VTPC magnet fall, run stops for 5 weeks • 2 distributors fixed in Belgrade, 1 more replaced by custom made
Recapitulation In total: For ~5.5 month of work we replace 9 distributors!
Status • Replacing the rest of the old CAEN distributors in Crate 1 and 2, we will get 8 more spare distributors • Enough for another ~6 months of work! Not acceptable!
Pixels statistic December 2012, Be @ 13 GeV
Pixels statistic January 2013, Be @ 20 GeV
Pixels statistic February 2013, Be @ 30 GeV
Pixels statistic Left side: 81 dead pixels (9.1%) (~70 PMT!) 17 almost dead (1.9%) ------------------------------- 98 not working (11.0%) Right side: 20 dead pixels (2.2%) (~16 PMT!) 4 almost dead (0.5%) ------------------------------- 24 not working (2.7%)
Conclusion • Right wall looking good • Left wall is “very annoying” (credits to Marek!) • For replacement of dead scintilator-PMT pixel we need Dubna knowhow! • PMT is glued to scintilator! Cannot be ”unglued”! • Perhaps make some try with MPPC chips, glued on the other side • Vadim is back to NA61, this will be a great help • Timetable?
ToF Readout upgrade • ToF readout electronic suffer from the same illness as HV supply: old electronics, no replacement part, cannot be repaired • During last year we had lot of discussion how to resolve this problem • Two proposal for upgrade
DRS4 Solution • Based on DRS4 chip from PSI • Basicaly very fast pulse shape recorder/analyser, 200ps sample time • Test performed during December last year show that we can reach 30-50ps resolution in real situation • Is it sufficient?
DRS4 Solution • Pro - Lot of RD already done - QCD already exists (pulse shape) - Sandro will push it! - Lot of men power already provided • Contra - Price (>300 kCHF) - Resolution - Integration with existed DAQ
TBR Solution • Based on FPGA chip • Design from GSI and Krakow • Claim that can achieve instrict 15ps resolution
TRB Solution • Pro - Resolution - DAQ interface already developed - 256 chan per unit - Price (several times cheaper than DRS4) • Contra - Manpower for implementation to SHINE - Integration with existed DAQ
ToF Readout upgrade • Lot of work needed! • Lot of problems exists: integration to DAQ, replacement of the old units, cabling, software • Not so much time!!! • Decision has to be make soon!
THE END THIS IS NOT
Belgrade cluster • Start working last week • Now: 64 cores in working nodes, 8TB storage • Virtualization: CENTOS, KVM, CloudStack • Virtual OS: only SLC for a moment • 400 jobs submitted, pp158, VENUS • 400 kEvents in 75 minutes!
THE END NOW IS
