Characteristics • Diet - Herbivore (Eucalyptus leaves) • Size - 15-30lbs, 2ft long • Climate - hot, dry, and light • Housing - in trees • Relation - Humans are only predator • Reproduction • Age - females: 2 years old, Males: 3-4 years old • Offspring - 1, rarely twins are born • Frequency - every year • Gestation period - 34-36 days • Pack? - no, a loner

  4. Interesting facts • Can reduce blood flow to conserve heat • Will shiver when its below 10 degrees • Use “evaporative cooling” in their airways to cool themselves • Can reduce the amount of water in urine to reduce water loss

  5. Why its endangered • Over hunting in the 1900’s • Habitat destruction

  7. Conservation Effort • The Australian government leaves it up to the separate principalities to decide what to do • Some of the principalities don’t want to admit that the Koala is endangered • Only one principality has done anything to help
