  1. Canyon Lake High School 2014 - 2015

  2. Dual Credit presentation objectives: Dual Credit: • What Is It? • Why Do I Want It? • How Can I Get It?

  3. Dual Credit Program • Allows eligible students to earn college credit for certain high school courses in which they are enrolled. • High school courses that adhere to college-level standards. • Taught at Canyon Lake HS during the same time that the high school course is scheduled. • Classes are full year courses*. • A student may earn up to 6 college credits a year in 2 free DC classes a semester as a Jr. or Sr. and 1 as a Sophomore. (potential of 28 – 30 credit hours by graduation.) *Exception is the POFT/Math 1314 courses which are offered in the Spring

  4. Why take Dual Credit? • Increases the likelihood that a student will complete high school, and enroll in and persist in college. • Contributes to the goals of Closing the Gaps through greater participation and increased academic success. • New graduates enter the workforce sooner and begin to earn wages, benefiting themselves and the economy. • Decreases cost of tuition and fees for students by accelerating time to degree.

  5. Potential Savings?

  6. Taking the DC classes at Canyon Lake means that once you get to the college, you have already earned the credit. • Challenging course work prepares you for the rigor of college work! • Looks great on transcript when applying to college. (If you made good grades!) • Advanced Measures towards Distinguished Plan • Texas Grant eligibility (MORE FREE MONEY!)

  7. What grade does the student need to maintain? • St. Philip’s College: You will earn credit as long as you maintain a C in the class each semester. You will be dropped if you earn a D for the semester. • Canyon Distinguished Plan: You must maintain a Baverage each semester to earn one advanced measure per semester. • One *DC class will get you two advanced measures (1 per semester) ! *Exception of Math1314 -receive one measure =3credits

  8. How many Dual Credit courses can a student take? • The school district and St. Philip’s covers the cost for juniors and seniors who qualify to take 2 dual credit courses a year. • Sophomores who qualify can take 1 dual credit course.

  9. What classes currently earn Dual Credit at CLHS?1. ITSW 1301- BIMM2. SPAN 1411- SPAN III3. SPAN 2311- SPAN IV

  10. All students who are performing poorly in the dual credit course • may be dropped from the college-level course within the first week or two of the semester by the published deadline • to avoid future problems related to : • admissions • financial aid, and • scholarships at institutions If a student withdraws from a dual credit course after the published deadline, a “W” will be placed on their college transcript. Students who complete the college-level course but earn a D or an F will not be allowed to enroll in another dual credit course while in high school. DROP after withdrawal Deadline FAILURE – D or F earned in Dual Credit Class

  11. 6-Drop Rule • Texas Education Code §51.907 places limitations on the number of course drops that are allowed for students in public institutions of higher education. • However, neither this law nor Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board rules specifically address dual credit students. The Texas Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers (TACRAO ) developed a guide to assist institutions of higher education in implementing the so-called “6-drop Rule,” which recommends that courses taken by students while enrolled in high school – whether for dual credit or for college credit alone – not be included in the course drop limit. • For more information on this recommendation, review this document on the TACRAO website: http://www.tacrao.org/documents/SixDropImplementation_10-20-08.pdf

  12. A successfully completed dual credit course earns the student college credit which may be applied toward an associate degree and/or may transfer to other colleges and universities as a required class or an elective. (All are required and all cost the same amount!)

  21. How does the credit transfer? • Canyon Lake delivers official high school transcripts to St. Philips the second week in June. • The student requests a final transcript from St. Philip’s College to be sent to the University of their choice after he/she graduates from Canyon Lake. • Start requesting the 4th week of June.

  22. Attention Parents and Students             Comal Independent School District is authorized to provide dual credit courses for eligiblehigh school students on the basis of an articulated agreement between CISD and Alamo Colleges/St. Philip’s College.  This agreement requires that participating dual credit students abide by a set of policies, procedures, and timelines put in place by Alamo Colleges/St. Philip’s College.Because Comal ISD has no jurisdiction or control over SPC policies, procedures, andtimelines, when an issue arises, our ability to advocate on a student’s behalf is often limited.  In addition, SPC prefers to resolve issues by working directly with the student involved.  Therefore, while CISDis eager to assist students whenever possible, we have found that the most effective studentadvocate is often the student, himself.

  23. Any questions? No Excuses/No ExceptionsTurn in your Student Information form to sign up for a January ApplyTexassession!Sign-up sheets available in the Rotunda, Counselors Office and from Dr. Hartman!

Counted towards your college degree if you earn 80% or higher.
