Duties and Powers of Governor • Head of state • Responsible for ensuring that laws are carried out • Peace is preserved • Commander of the state military forces • Reviews bills and resolutions of the General Assembly • Veto power
Duties and Powers of Governor • Issues writ of election to fill vacant offices in the House and Senate • Calls special sessions of the General Assembly • Fill vacancies in public office unless otherwise dictated by the constitution • Fills elected executive positions left vacant, upon confirmation of the Senate.
Lieutenant Governor • Provides over the state Senate • Serves on the committee that determines committee membership and committee chairperson • Cannot vote or sponsor legislation, he or she works with advocates in the Senate to introduce legislation • Can influence state policy and establish spending priorities • If governor leaves office, the lieutenant governor becomes the chief executive until a successor is elected at the next general election
