  1. Unit 3 Building a Protobot

  2. Objectives • Know the Engineering Design Process • Manipulate objects and navigate with the protobot.

  3. Engineering Design Process • Identify the need. • Define the problem to be solved. • Gather information. • Conduct research. • Find alternative solutions. • Analyze possible solutions. • Design, test and evaluate the best solution. • Build • Communicate, market and sell the product.

  4. Engineering Process for the VEX Robot • Identify the need – education and competition. • Define the Problem – get an idea of the competition or challenge presented and prioritize the objectives of the robot, • Conduct Research and Gather Information – look at more than one solution. Look at restrictions in the environment, dimensions of the robot, etc.

  5. 4. Find and Analyze Possible Solutions – identify pros and cons of each solution. Develop 3 design solutions and evaluate each.Answer the following questions: • Are there enough parts to make the design work ? • Will more investment be needed ? • Can the design be streamlined ? • Are there size and weight restraints ? • Will specialized tools be required ?

  6. 5. Design, Test and Evaluate the Best Solution – sketch on a piece of paper or use a program like google sketch-up. 6. Build. 7. Compete.

  7. Requirements for Unit 3 • THINK Phase – Lecture and Keyterms • BUILD Phase – Construct Protobot • AMAZE Phase • Tennis Ball game (timed and BOT vs BOT). • Engineering Notebook – answer questions on p. 88 under headings ENGINEERING NOTEBOOK and PRESENTATIONS. • STEM – Science - #1, 2, 3 Eng – 1, 2, 5 Technology – 1 and 2 Math – 1, 2 ,3
