  9. Sped 496 • This is a new class during which all requirements for professional development will be completed • You are still required to complete 45 hours • The focus of your hours should still be your induction emphasis (from your induction plan)

Sped 599: Independent StudyThesis/Research Project Only • You & your chair decide how often you will meet in addition to the assignments in the course syllabus. • Need permit to enroll • Pre-requisite(s): Sped 520, Sped 522 Sped 532 • Can be taken before, after, or in conjunction with Sped 510 • Can be taken along with Sped 596

Sped 599: Independent StudyThesis/Research Project Only • Brief review of class: • Work independently with your committee chair • Focus on writing Ch. 2 (literature review) and Ch. 3 (method), IRB (if necessary), collecting data • How many times can I take the class? 3 (max. but only 2 will count on your study plan) • How many units should I register for? 3 • Course syllabus will be distributed via your Sped 599 Blackboard site

  13. 599 Syllabus • Blackboard • Assignments • Due dates • No incompletes will be granted • No papers will be returned to you. Keep a copy of what you submit. • All material is due on Fri. Dec. 7, 2007 by 5:00 pm to your course instructor. If you turn in your material late, the highest grade you can earn is a B. This applies to everyone.

Sped 596Advanced Research Seminar • Pre-requisites: Level I Preliminary credential (for credential and MS students), Sped 522 & Sped 532 (MS only students), Sped 510 (all students), • Brief review of class: • Focus on final completion of chapters 4 (results) and 5 (discussion) • Begin (if not already done) or complete IRB (if necessary) • Have access to support via course instructor, colleagues in your class, your committee chair (of course)

More about Sped 596 • How many times can I take the class? 2 max. • How many units should I register for? 3 • Course syllabus will be distributed via your course instructor either in class or via Blackboard • Final thoughts: • Although you have an instructor it is still your responsibility to make adequate progress toward completing your thesis or project • It is your responsibility to continue to meet with your committee chair

  18. You are not an official graduate student until your study plan has been approved by the Graduate Studies Office Hear ye, Hear Ye

MS Degree Study Plans • Only 9 units of post-baccalaureate work (work that was completed after your BA or BS) will be accepted on a study plan if they were taken before you were admitted into the MS degree program. • You may include a maximum of 3 Sped 599 (only 2 will count on your study plan) and 2 Sped 596 classes on your study plan • 5 year rule – your classes have a 5 year life span

  20. Nature of Graduate Students(Graduate Studies Office) • Class Assignments/Research • Critical Thinking/Reading • Writing Clearly • Speaking Persuasively • Employs Solid Research Methods • Final Project/Thesis required

Minimum Expectations for all Graduate Students • Uses APA style and has an APA manual (most current edition) • Knowledge of what constitutes plagiarism • Uses person first language • Has strong writing skills • Initiates contact with committee chair • Is responsible for knowing important dates

  23. Continuous Enrollment • You must be CONTINUOUSLY enrolled • If you have no more classes to take: • Take a class in another class in another department • Take Sped 551, Sped 599, or Sped 596 if you haven’t already • Speak to your faculty advisor or committee chair ASAP

Continuous Enrollment GS 700 • Sign up only if : • all courses have been completed and you do NOT need any faculty assistance • you have completed all of your requirements • you have applied for graduation • you are in good academic standing • GS700 forms must be submitted to the graduate advisor at least 2 weeks prior to the date that it is due. Be sure to include your most recent unofficial transcripts and an email address.

Academic Probation: cumulative GPA falls below a 3.0 If student’s GPA cannot be raised by the second semester following the date placed on probation the student may be disqualified from the program (in consultation with the graduate program adviser) Administrative Probation/disqualification: Repeated withdrawal Failure to progress Non-compliance with an academic requirement Inappropriate behavior (see Student Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, University Regulations) Graduate PoliciesAcademic/Administrative Probation

SPED 597/8 • Enroll in 597/8 only when you are absolutely ready to graduate and upon consent of your chair (this means you are done and simply need to put the finishing touches on your thesis or project) • Enroll in 597/8 only ONCE • See Grad studies page for important dates and deadlines • Some information will be available on the bulletin board outside EC 554

Very Important • It is your responsibility to: • Turn in a copy of your thesis/project signature page and a copy of a binding receipt to the department graduate advisor Dr. Ferko (EC 554) when you have completed your thesis/project. If you do not do this, you will not receive your diploma. • Notify the graduate advisor if you have an RP in Sped 596/7/8/9. You can determine this by checking your unofficial transcripts which you can access via your student portal.

Graduation • Graduation check and fee paid prior to the beginning of the semester of graduation • Submit a copy of your signature page and your binding receipt to the department graduate advisor (Dr. Ferko). • Submit at least 2 copies of your thesis/project to the Department (one for the Department and one for your Committee Chair). • Changing graduation date – go to Admissions and Records for form. Must pay a fee.

Due Dates to Chair • Theses– Final draft due to Chair by Oct. 19, 2007 • Submit to Graduate Studies Office no later than Nov. 26, 2007 • Submit signature page to graduate advisor Dec. 7, 2007 • Submit receipt verifying binding of thesis to graduate advisor Dec. 21, 2007 • Projects – Final draft due to Chair by Friday October 27, 2007 • Submit signature page to graduate advisor Dec. 7, 2007 • Submit receipt verifying binding of thesis to graduate advisor Dec. 21, 2007 • Remember, your committee has to read and sign off on your thesis/project

  32. Master Degree Student Exit Survey • All graduating Sped 597/8 students must complete an exit survey pertaining to you Master’s Degree program by December 18, 2007 or your grades will be held. • Go to the College of Education website http://ed.fullerton.edu/, then to the Current Students tab at the top of the page, then click on Master’s Students

REMEMBER • Check the graduate studies website for important dates:www.fullerton.edu/graduate/ • all forms • thesis manual • schedule of important dates • If you receive an RP for Sped 599, 597/8, it is YOUR responsibility to make sure that notify the Graduate Program Advisor (Dr. Ferko) that you need a grade change or your degree will not be posted • Do not contact the graduate studies office. Contact your committee chair or department Graduate Program Advisor if you have any questions or concerns.
