  10. What is Transitional Kindergarten (TK)? History of TK: ● Transitional Kindergarten (TK) was introduced via The Kindergarten Readiness Act of the 2010 Senate Bill 1381 ● Is considered the first year of a two-year Kindergarten program

  11. What is Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK)? AB 131 changed the eligibility for TK over a 4-year period: ● 2022-23: 5th birthday on or between September 2 - February 2 ● 2023-24: 5th birthday on or between September 2 – April 2 ● 2024-25: 5th birthday on or between September 2 – June 2 ● 2025-26: 4th birthday by September 1st (UTK in place) TK is considered to be “the bridge between preschool and Kindergarten!”

Who is Eligible for TK in 2024-25? ● For the 2024-25 school year: Any child who turns 5 on or between September 2nd and June 2 is eligible for TK ○ *The District does not implement early admittance into TK, and will not accept any child who is younger than the TK eligibility dates. ● Children who turn 5 years old on or before September 1st are eligible for Kindergarten ○ Children who turn 5 years old between June 1 and September 1st can apply for TK instead of Kindergarten, but admittance will be dependent on space in the program

  15. What Will My Child Be Learning in TK? TK focuses on school readiness skills! In TK, students will be learning: ● Social-Emotional Skills ● Math Skills ● Language and Literacy Skills ● Science ● Physical Development ● “Ready to Learn” Skills

About our TK Classroom Structure: ● Class is approximately 4 hours a day ● Early Bird/Late Owl model (about 2 hours of overlap) ● Taught by a certificated teacher with 24 ECE units ● Includes one part-time paraprofessional ● Class breakdown: ○ 24 students max per class, 12 per session ○ 1:12 adult to student ratio

TK Daily Routines All of our TK Classrooms include the following components: ● Circle Time ● Free Play/Free Choice ● Small group instruction (Centers) ● Whole group instruction ○ Phonemic Awareness, Language and Literacy, Math Instruction, Social- Emotional Development ● Music & Movement ● Snack ● Recess/Outdoor Play

  18. Daily Schedule 8:15 a.m. - 12:08 p.m. Early Birds ● ● 9:45 a.m. - 1:38 p.m. Late Birds ● Recess 10:15 - 10:45 a.m. (EB & LB)

  19. Snack and Lunch Information ● TK students participate in a daily “snack and recess” opportunity ○ About 15 minutes for snack, 15 minutes for recess ● TK students have the opportunity to participate in the free Universal Meals

Food & Nutrition Services ● Breakfast and lunch are available to all students at CUSD for FREE. ○ Depending on the time of recess, TK students have access to free breakfast or free lunch. ● Breakfast and lunch follow regulations from the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act and include: ○ Whole grains ○ Protein ○ Fruit ○ Vegetables ○ Milk

  22. Food & Nutrition Services - FAQ ● My student has a food allergy - what do I do? ○ Submit a Medical Statement to Request Special Meals. Must be signed by physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner. ■ Available at capistrano.healtheliving.net ● We are a vegetarian family - what do I do? ○ Vegetarian options are available daily and are indicated on the menu. ● Our family does not eat pork - what do I do? ○ Few items contain pork and are indicated on the menu.   23. The First Day of School! Tuesday, August 20, 2024 Parents: Plan on attending the first day of school with your child from EB, 8:15- 9:28 a.m. and LB, 9:45 - 10:58 a.m. to. This will be a shortened day where you and your child will meet the teacher and learn more about the classroom and procedures.

How to Prepare for the First Day of TK Have your child practice the following at home: ● Being completely independent in bathroom (i.e. pull down/pull up clothing, wipe independently, etc.) ● Opening and closing backpack, lunch box, and water bottle ● Carrying their own backpack, lunchbox or any personal belongings ● Putting on and taking off their shoes ● Practicing good hygiene skills- hand washing, covering mouth/nose, and using a tissue ● Asking for help when it's needed ● Listening to stories by reading to your child daily ● Separating from you/saying goodbye Tips for Getting Your Child Ready for School!

How to Prepare for the First Day of TK - cont’d We kindly ask that you please make sure: ● All of your child’s items are labeled with their first and last name ● Your child wears appropriate shoes for running and the playground (i.e. sneakers, no crocs or sandals). ● Recommended items for school: ○ Normal-sized backpack ○ Lunchbox ○ Water bottle ○ Extra clothes in case of an accident/emergency

TK Enrollment Process How Do I Enroll My Child in TK? ● If Bathgate or Viejo are your homeschool, then you can register to attend Bathgate using the process below. ● If you want to attend Bathgate through School Of Choice, you will need to register at your homeschool first to get your student’s ID number, and then apply for School of Choice on the CUSD website from January 29th-March 1st. ● On or after January 29th, complete the online registration found on either the Bathgate or CUSD websites. If you have a printer, please print the registration packet to bring with you when you register. ● On the Bathgate website, click on the Registration Tab and then click on TK Registration 2024-2025. Print the two forms (Home Language Survey and Program Information Form) to bring when you register. ● Gather the items mentioned on the registration checklist, and call our office at 949-348-0451 to schedule an appointment. Appointment dates will be scheduled starting on Thursday, February 29th.

Required Registration and Enrollment Paperwork: The following documentation is required to finalize enrollment: ● AIR online confirmation page ● Verification of residency (2) ● Mortgage verification/rental agreement and current utility bill ● Proof of age ● Child’s immunization record ● Copy of parent/guardian ID

Required Immunizations for TK ● 4 Polio, 5 DTaP, 3 HepB, 2MMR, 2 Varicella required before the first day of school ○ According to the CA Department of Public Health, even four- year-old children need their kindergarten immunizations prior to the first day of transitional kindergarten (https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/Immuniz ation/School/tk-12-transitional-k.aspx) ● For students who are 3 years old at the time of admission/registration, students must meet the pre-kindergarten immunization requirements: ○ 3 Polio, 4 DTaP, 3 Hep B, 1 Varicella, 1 Hib4*, 1 MMR* (*On or after the 1st birthday) ● Once the child turns 4 years old, they should meet the TK/K immunization requirements (and are required before the first day of TK) ● Students may be admitted if there is medical exemption. Medical exemptions must be submitted through https://cair.cdph.ca.gov/exemptions

YMCA Before and After School Care ● TK / Learning Bridge YMCA Program Learning Bridge is a structured, academic enrichment program that reinforces concepts taught in your child’s classroom-based on state and district standards. This expanded learning program operates on all school days from TK dismissal until all school dismissal. Extended childcare also available until 6pm. Core Components of the Expanded Program include: •Language Arts/Literacy •S.T.E.M. •Construction/Problem Solving •Mathematics/Manipulative Activities •Arts and Humanities •Social Emotional Learning •Character Development •Inclusion support for children with special needs
