  1. Today’s Passage: Luke 6:31-37 (Please read in advance)

  2. 6:31-37 December 29, 2013

  3. 1) Treat others as God has treated us. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. 3) Receivers should be givers. 4) Leaders should lead themselves. 5) Good trees should produce good fruit. 6) Truth plus obedience is a solid foundation. 6:31 - 37 JHK

  4. 1) Treat others as God has treated us. “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31) Hillel Simeon Gamaliel “Then Paul said: “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city. I studied under Gamaliel and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors.” (Acts 22:3) Shammai “That which is despicable to you, do not do to your fellow, this is the whole Torah, and the rest is commentary, go and learn it.” ---Rabbi Hillel, Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat 31a, c. 30BC (Strict, literal interpretation) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  5. 1) Treat others as God has treated us. “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31) “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4) “In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church - for we are members of his body.” (Ephesians 5:28-30) “My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” (Proverbs 3:11-12) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  6. 1) Treat others as God has treated us. “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31) “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29) “And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times.” (Psalm 12:6) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  7. 1) Treat others as God has treated us. “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31) “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” (Colossians 3:13) “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” (Jeremiah 31:34b) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  8. 1) Treat others as God has treated us. “The first to apologize is the bravest. The first to forgive is the strongest. The first to forget is the happiest.” ---unknown 6:31 - 37 JHK

  9. 1) Treat others as God has treated us. “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.” (Luke 6:32-34) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  10. 1) Treat others as God has treated us. “For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:20) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  11. 1) Treat others as God has treated us. “But love your enemies, do good to them, andlend to them without expecting to get anything back.” (Luke 6:35a) “If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest.” (Exodus 22:25) “As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.” (Luke 12:58) “If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites… do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them. Rather, be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need.” (Deuteronomy 15:7-8) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  12. 1) Treat others as God has treated us. “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:36) “Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.” (James 2:12-13) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  13. 1) Treat others as God has treated us. “But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.” (Luke 6:35) After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” (Genesis 15:1) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  14. 1) Treat others as God has treated us. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” (Luke 6:37) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  15. Christianity is: 1) Loving everyone. 2) Not judging anyone. Common false notions about Christianity Christianity is tolerating everything as long as no one is harmed.

  16. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” (Luke 6:37) • What Jesus means. • What Jesus does not mean. • What we can do to apply this practically. 6:31 - 37 JHK

  17. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. • What Jesus means. “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned.” • Hebrew parallelism. • The second statement parallels and adds emphasis to the first. • Not two separate statements but one statement expressed two ways. 6:31 - 37 JHK

  18. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. • What Jesus means. “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.” καί κρίνωμή καί οὐμήκρίνω (but judge not and never judged) “Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned.” καταδικάζωμή καί οὐμή καταδικάζω (and condemn not and never condemned) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  19. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. • What Jesus means. κρίνω (krino)- “judge” • to determine, resolve, decree. • to pronounce an opinion concerning right and wrong. καταδικάζω (katadikazo) - “condemn” • to pronounce guilty; to condemn. 6:31 - 37 JHK

  20. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. • What Jesus means. “This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets…” (Romans 2:16a) “I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge.” (John 8:50) “He has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed.” (Acts 17:31) “We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body…” (II Corinthians 5:10) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  21. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. • What Jesus means. “Anyone who says to a brother, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court and anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.” (Matthew 5:22b) ῥακά (rhaka) - “Raca” • slang for an empty headed man; similar to “blockhead.” Insult μωρός (moros)- “fool” • impious, ungodly; one morally, not mentally deficient. Condemnation 6:31 - 37 JHK

  22. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. • What Jesus means. ▪ We are not to take God’s place in pronouncing final judgment (condemnation) upon anyone. ▪ Our part is to love, tell people about Jesus and assert the truth of Scripture while leaving the rest up to God. 6:31 - 37 JHK

  23. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. • What Jesus does not mean. “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” (I Corinthians 15:33) “Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.” (I Corinthians 10:14-15) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  24. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. “I wrote to you not to associate with sexually immoral people, not meaning the people of this world who are immoral…In that case you would have to leave this world. But I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler…What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside.” (I Corinthians 5:9-13a) 6:31 - 37 JHK

  25. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. • What Jesus does not mean. ▪ That we never make moral discernments about thoughts, words, acts and other people. ▪ That we are not to hold one another accountable in the Body of Christ for our moral behavior. ▪ That “anything goes” as far as morality. 6:31 - 37 JHK

  26. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. • What Jesus does not mean. “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” ►How can we forgive someone unless they have wronged us? ► How can we conclude that someone has wronged us if we are not allowed to make any moral judgments? 6:31 - 37 JHK

  27. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. • What Jesus does not mean. Reductio ad absurdum (Latin: “reduction to absurdity”) is the technique of reducing an argument or hypothesis to absurdity, by pushing the argument's premise to its logical limit and showing how ridiculous the consequences would be, thus disproving the argument. 6:31 - 37 JHK

  28. Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined…If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? (Matthew 12:25-26) Argument - Jesus is casting out demons by Satan’s power. • If Satan were divided, his kingdom would be ruined. • Satan’s kingdom is not ruined (evidenced by demonic activity). • Thus, the argument is disproved. 6:31 - 37 JHK

  29. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. • What we can do to apply this practically. ►We must make moral evaluations in order to be holy. ► We should not be judgmental, i.e. act as the moral police. ►We need to be humble, merciful and gracious in our dealings. ► We must not allow this to be a license for unrestrained sin. 6:31 - 37 JHK
