  1. Go Global Seek. Discover. Transform. web:www.students.ubc.ca/global email: go.global@ubc.ca tel: 604.822.0942

  2. Why Go Global? • Why Go Global? • To gain first-hand knowledge of international issues, ideas and cultures. • To become globally aware, to grow and develop as a person, and to gain cross-cultural understanding. • To connect meaningfully with the people in your host country; experience life abroad as a student, not just as a tourist.

  3. Programs At a Glance: International Service Learning • International Service Learning • Learn about global issues first-hand by working on community-based projects in Africa and Latin America • Deepen your understanding through pre-departure training sessions, ongoing facilitated reflection, and re-entry debrief sessions. • Some credit-bearing and internship programs available

  4. Programs At a Glance: International Service Learning • International Service Learning: • When can I go? • Reading break programs • Travel as a group accompanied by UBC staff • Excellent intro to global issues and development • 12- Week programs • Learn about global issues and development in depth • Summer programs • Term 1 and 2 programs • All international placements include three to six pre-departure learning sessions and post-experience debriefing

  5. Programs At a Glance: International Service Learning • International Service Learning: • How do I choose? • Choose a program based on its learning theme • Learning themes linked to the Millennium Development Goals and to the placement region. For example: • Sustainable Development in Costa Rica • Literacy and education systems in Uganda • Community development approach • We work with our community partners to identify community priorities and needs, and related projects. • We shift and flow alongside our community partners. • The specifics of your placement will be subject to change. This is what development is all about.

  6. International Service Learning “My [experience] altered my perceptions about global standards and development, making me realize that such words are not hard and fast but relative and insanely complex. Whether from a personal or more public sense of learning, I’m so much more aware of how much more I need to learn.”

  7. International Service Learning “[As a result of my ISL experience] I had become someone who I barely knew, someone with a huge amount of energy, courage to talk to strangers, and a thirst to learn about those around me. My newfound inspiration didn’t fade as soon as I stepped off the plane to Vancouver.”

  8. Upcoming Opportunities: International Service Learning • Sustainable Development: Costa Rica • Reading Week Opportunity for IPP Students • Our community partner in Costa Rica is ASVO (Asociación de Voluntarios para el Servicio en las Áreas Protegidas). • Costa Rica has over 160 national parks and wildlife refuges • ASVO is dedicated to protecting endangered species and biodiversity • A team of up to 20 UBC students will be working with ASVO on projects on the Caribbean or Pacific coasts of Costa Rica.

  9. Upcoming Opportunities: International Service Learning Timeline for Reading Week Programs
