  1. Decimals & Percents DP Percent refers to a value compared to 100. Decimals refer to a value compared to 1. Decimals are always written with a decimal point (.) Percents are always written with a percent sign (%) In a decimal, 1 represents the whole amount, any value less than 1 is less than the whole, and any value greater than 1 is greater than the whole. In a percent, 100% represents the whole amount, any value less than 100 is less than the whole, and any value greater than 100 is more than the whole.

  2. Since decimals are compared to 1, and percents are compared to 100, when you convert a decimal to percent, the number must become 100 times greater. So… DP move decimal point right 2 places…

  3. Since percents are compared to 100 and decimals are compared to 1, when you convert percent to decimal, the number must become 100 times lesser. So… DP move decimal point left 2 places…

  4. Percent is another way of writing fractions with a denominator of 100. To turn a fraction into a percent, (1) make equivalent fraction with 100 for denominator. (2) Write numerator with % sign Example: Joe caught 4 of the 5 footballs thrown at him. What percent of throws did Joe catch? What percent of throws did Joe miss?

  5. Now you try!!!! Nina ran 0.78 mile in 5 minutes. What percent of a mile did she run? Cole did 85% of his homework over the weekend. Express this quantity as a decimal number. Vivianne spent 65.5% of her allowance at the mall. What decimal number represents how much she did not spend?

  6. Partner up & work these out (1) Christina’s dad drove 0.69 of the total miles to Disney World. What percent of the total miles did he drive? (2) Grant listened to 14 of the 20 songs on his new CD. What percent of the CD’s songs did he hear? (3) Mrs. Reed graded 35% of her students’ work this weekend. What fraction of the work has she graded? (4) What decimal still needs to be graded?
